About The Position

The Infusion Medical Assistant provides specific back-office support to the infusion registered nurses, physicians, and other staff in the delivery of chemotherapy and other infusion treatments. Escorts patients to infusion rooms. Maintains clean, neat and well-stocked infusion bays and carts. Must have knowledge of chemotherapy regimens, scheduling of treatments, and basic knowledge of infusion routines. Maintains patient information that is accurate and charts/paperwork are filed correctly. Maintains medical records. Performs a variety of clerical support duties including receptionist, telephone, scheduling, message management and data input. Utilizes knowledge and skill to provide appropriate care in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and protocols and Arizona validated competencies. Assists with patient care during emergencies such as medication infusion reactions under the direction of the physician and care team. The MA works in a team model to improve the patient's experience, create better communication and access to care, and support processes that will improve patient satisfaction.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED Required
  • Completion of a MA training program Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Certification Required
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card (FPC) - Certificate Required
  • Completion of an approved training program OR Completion of an unapproved training program and Successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute as described by the Arizona Administrative Code (Chapter 16 – Arizona Medical Board - R4-16-401 and R4-16-101) OR Completes a United States Armed Forces medical services training program Required

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in real time, including patient infusion schedules, physician appointments, medication administration, and any reactions or changes during the infusion of chemotherapy.
  • Coordinate the schedules with the treatment, lab, and physician appointments orders as provided in the work queue.
  • Link clinical information with appropriate insurance referral.
  • Ensures accurate documentation of vital signs including weight, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, and oximetry readings.
  • Report any pertinent health escalations to the health care team.
  • Direct communication with health care team regarding patient scheduling and needs.
  • Prepare patients for chemotherapy administration or other infusions/ injections by assuring that their treatment has insurance authorization.
  • Schedule patients for these treatments accordingly.
  • Communicate directly with authorization team and patient financial counselor regarding insurance authorization.
  • Direct communication with patients via phone or in person regarding their appointments and progress on insurance authorizations.
  • Escort patients to infusion room, obtains vital signs, and orients patients to infusion room processes.
  • Assist with adverse medication reactions by documenting vital signs and completing tasks as directed by physician or nursing.
  • Administer and record injections under the supervision and order of the physician.
  • Perform venipuncture and obtains specimens, performs CLIA waived lab tests.
  • Ensure all equipment is ready for use for the day and assists with equipment set-up and stocking of supplies.
  • Maintain appropriate PAR levels of supplies and monitors for expiration dates.
  • Make certain all hazardous waste containers are ready for use and dispose of ones that are filled with waste or SHARPS.
  • Adhere to safety guidelines for handling and disposal of biohazardous waste.
  • Properly clean clinical infusion bays and equipment to ensure that they are ready for care of patients that are immunocompromised.
  • Monitor patients during treatment for any adverse reactions or complications, immediately reporting any clinical issues to the healthcare team.
  • Provide supportive care to patients with non-medical needs.
  • Assist patients to and from the restroom.
  • Offer patients drinks or snacks, pillows, and blankets for comfort.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
