About The Position

The APDerm Network of Practices is seeking a Gap Year Medical Assistant to join their team. This internship is designed for individuals considering a gap year before medical school, offering valuable patient care experience in general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology. Interns will receive mentorship from practicing Dermatologists, enhance their chances of medical school admission, and gain experience in various dermatology procedures and patient education. The role involves assisting physicians, documenting in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and collaborating with a practice team. Responsibilities

  • Assist physicians with office procedures for biopsies, surgeries, and treatments for various skin conditions.
  • Document/scribe for physicians in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Provide patient education and post-operative care instructions.
  • Work as part of a team within the practice.
  • Provide direct and indirect care to patients in a dermatology healthcare setting.
  • Collaborate with clinicians and other ambulatory support staff.
  • Scribe/Document office visits on the computer for the clinician.
  • Provide cross coverage when needed.
  • Assist clinical trainers in training new MAs and Gap Interns and retraining current MAs and Gap Interns.
  • Ensure all necessary information and materials are present for the clinician prior to the patient visit.
  • Receive and communicate information through various processes, including computers, Intranet, e-mail, fax, and documentation in the patient’s medical record.
  • Ensure all appropriate equipment is in good working order and adequate supplies are available.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and understand cost containment.
  • Obtain and electronically record an accurate history of present illness; update patient problem list, allergies, pharmacy, medication list, and history of skin cancer.
  • Instruct and teach patients aftercare for surgical and cosmetic procedures, ensuring patient understanding.
  • Assist with OSHA daily and monthly checks and maintain the OSHA log.
  • Complete suture inventory and check rooms for expiring inventory.
  • Travel to brand or region practice locations to provide clinical coverage when needed, including for clinician vacations, sick calls, and PTO.

  • Complete all assigned required training by the deadline.
  • Escort patients to the appropriate room, accurately obtain and record history and chief complaint.
  • Prepare patients for appointments based on diagnosis, procedure, and practice protocols.
  • Perform proper pre-visit procedures under the direction of the clinician.
  • Learn and perform ancillary services such as phototherapy, XTRAC, and PDT.
  • Assist clinicians in educating patients on biologic injection protocols.
  • Sterilize and package instruments.
  • Assist clinicians with the preparation of cosmetic procedures.
  • Observe and report any abnormal symptoms or behavior to the appropriate clinician.
  • Organize and prioritize daily work tasks to ensure smooth clinician schedules and meet patient needs.
  • Utilize standard precautions in room preparation and while assisting with procedures/exams.
  • Perform appropriate specimen collection, including labeling and ensuring proper specimen handling.
  • Record and maintain pathology logbook.
  • Provide and review appropriate instructions to patients regarding procedures or testing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and patient rights.
  • Perform suture removals or other procedures as directed by the clinician.
  • Perform proper dosing and mixing of medications.
  • Perform injections of subcutaneous and intramuscular medications with demonstrated competency and supervisory agreement.
  • Seek advice from a clinician when needed for treatment adjustment or complications.
  • Lead clinical trials on various topical products and creams.
  • Meet with patients to explain study guidelines.
  • Help determine if patients meet exclusion or inclusion criteria for studies.
  • Provide patients with study products and proper paperwork.
  • Follow up with patients periodically and record progress of trials.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments for study participants.
  • Take photos of patients for before and after representation in studies.
  • Compile final results for studies, represented with PowerPoint presentations and/or graphical representation.
