About The Position

The Medical Assistant will support the overall operation of the Outpatient Department (OPD), providing assistance to nurses and the clinical manager in managing the day-to-day needs of the department. This role involves supporting the nurse in the management of medical and administrative information, greeting residents, making appointments, coordinating services, ordering supplies, and assisting physicians in taking vital signs for resident appointments. The job description is designed to outline responsibilities, but it's understood that not all situations can be listed. Employees are encouraged to provide the best customer service possible while accomplishing tasks. The omission of specific duties does not mean they should not be completed. This description outlines general duties and establishes a method for performing other duties as assigned by a Director, Vice President, or President.

Requirements

  • Follow and establish safety procedures and precautions when performing the aspects of your job.

  • Report all unsafe and hazardous conditions and equipment to your supervisor.
  • Maintain a work area that is clean and hazard free.

  • Use personal protective equipment when performing tasks that might involve infectious materials.
  • Report all equipment malfunctions or breakdowns immediately.
  • Report low or depleted supplies to the appropriate person.
  • Use equipment for its intended purpose.
  • Follow correct official procedures when using equipment.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of resident information.
  • Handle all resident property with respect.
  • Knock before entering into a resident’s room or dwelling.
  • Ensure that residents are treated fairly and with respect allowing for individuality and privacy.
  • Uphold the residents’ civil rights.
  • Follow all OSHA, CDC guidelines.
  • Review book of Material Safety Data Sheets prior to working with any chemicals.
  • Treat all team members fairly and equally without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap or marital status.
  • Adhere to all local, state or federal regulations as they apply.
  • Completes annual compliance training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the code of conduct in the performance of their duties.

  • Answering phones/making appointments for residents.
  • Welcoming residents to OPD.
  • Assist in taking vital signs for residents scheduled for doctors’ visits.
  • Prepare exam room.
  • Assist with filing and updating medical records.
  • Assist in coordinating laboratory services, diagnostic studies.
  • Assist in coordinating transportation to outside medical appointments.
  • Sending prescription orders to the pharmacy for new medications and refills.
  • Completing master lists, reports, and maintaining documentation on computer.
  • Enter information into resident record in the electronic medical record—e.g. updated immunization information.
  • Order supplies.
  • Prepare charts for physician visits including ensuring test results are available.
  • Restock exam rooms.
  • Transport residents to OPD for appointments, wellness checks.
  • Offers suggestions to improve resident care and facility practices.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADLS), encouraging maximum independence: Dressing/undressing, Bathing/showering, Personal hygiene (shaving, dental hygiene, nail care, hair care, foot care), Mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches), Monitors safe transfer and ambulation techniques, Care of equipment such as eyeglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids, Incontinence care.
  • Provide assistance with instrumental activities of daily living (IADLS): Telephone—assist with calls, hearing and vision adaptive devices, Housekeeping tasks such as tidying room, dusting, bed making and ironing, Coordinates transportation, Making appointments, Troubleshooting for residents.
  • Provide reminders or cues to take medications.
  • Assist with health maintenance and monitoring tasks: Observe and report changes in residents’ physical condition, cognitive and emotional status to supervisor or Outpatient Department (OPD) team as needed, Monitor for environmental safety hazards, Assist with dining—obtain meals, assist with set-up.
  • Report findings/observations to OPD team, as appropriate.
  • Plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate judgment.

  • Establishes priorities relative to the importance and/or resident need.
  • Demonstrates appropriate use infection control practices when providing resident care.
