About The Position

Under the supervision of the TB Supervisor or designee, the TB MA performs public health duties for the Tuberculosis Elimination program. The MA is responsible for performing routine technical clinic duties and assisting with other related duties, including providing patient care in the tuberculosis department. Duties may include explaining programs offered by the department to the client, assisting with the planning and organizing of a variety of TB clinical, education, and community activities, including but not limited to Direct Observed Therapy, blood draws, contact investigations, and a variety of clerical duties based on TB program needs.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistants and have current certification.
  • Must have current CPR certification.
  • Possess or obtain Vision and Hearing testing certification preferably within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform clinical procedures for which the certified MA has been trained in the MA program.
  • Performance of work will be limited to the work the MA has been prepared for.
  • Knowledge of accepted procedures for disposing of used supplies.
  • Knowledge and skills in computer software.
  • Maintain an objective attitude and exercise tact and initiative.
  • Ability to record observation completely accordingly, legible and concisely.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to follow safety rules on the job and use of protective personal equipment.
  • Knowledge of geographic area of Cameron County.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to evaluate information accurately and objectively.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver's License, comply with State of Texas Driving Laws, and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Employees of Cameron County may be required to work during any natural disaster or emergency, extended hours and non-traditional work schedules (i.e., Saturdays and Sundays).
  • Criminal background check is required for employment or continued employment.
  • Good health and physical condition sufficient to permit full performance of the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately document all time worked.
  • Ensure TB Program services are provided in a manner that is consistent and compliant with Texas Department of State Health Services TB Standing Delegation Orders.
  • Comply with all departmental policies and procedures including those for the TB Program, Clinical Services, and Cameron County.
  • Provide customer service in a manner that is conducive to establishing rapport with clients and their family members; healthcare providers; healthcare facilities, including local hospitals; and any organization that works towards providing TB control and prevention services.
  • Complete all required trainings and competencies in TB care as outlined in the DSHS TB Standing Delegation Orders, including 40 hours of initial training and education, followed by 16 hours of continuing education and training each calendar year.
  • Assist in the clinical setting by preparing the intake of patients, obtaining patient's medical history, performing vital signs, and preparing the patient for nurse or MD consultation, as well as documenting information in patient's medical record.
  • Perform vital signs, blood draws, natural sputum or induced sputum specimen collection and any other measurements, as requested by nurse or MD.
  • Perform tuberculin skin testing, pregnancy tests, glucose or any other tests as requested by nurse or MD.
  • Administer injections according to agency policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Properly label, store, and prepare blood specimens and sputum collections following the policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Prepare medical equipment and supplies for clinic services and/or as needed for activities in a community setting based on program and departmental needs.
  • Clean and maintain clinic equipment and dispose of used supplies following safety and infection control measures.
  • Work closely with all TB Program Supervisor or designee in ensuring proper procedures are followed while administering Direct Observed Therapy to TB patients.
  • Work closely with the Contact Investigator or designee to assist in administering contact exams on close and household contacts as needed.
  • Assist with patient referrals and follow up of the referrals, including both incoming and outgoing.
  • Assist in maintaining and collecting patient and program data for TB reports and presentations, as requested by TB Program Supervisor or designee.
  • Assist with Quality Assurance processes of TB patient records, as well as compliance of TB Program SDOs, policies and procedures set forth by the department and DSHS.
  • Establish client and community relationships, which contribute to the public awareness and understanding of TB Program elimination and control services.
  • Contribute towards meeting TB Program goals, objectives, and performance measures set forth by the department and DSHS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
