About The Position

The Medical Assistant performs administrative, clinical, and financial duties for the Pima County Health Department’s Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic. This role provides assistance to physicians, physicians’ assistants, and nurse practitioners. The Medical Assistant also assists registered nurse case managers by testing patients’ vital signs, recording medical histories, taking blood samples, and ensuring patients sign consent forms prior to consultation with the case manager. Essential Functions include ensuring the clinic and equipment are cleaned, disinfected, and organized, and that activities comply with quality assurance, risk management, safety, and infection control procedures. The role involves triaging patients, taking vital signs, drawing blood, performing CLIA-waived tests, and assisting patients with necessary forms. Additionally, the Medical Assistant supports case managers with examinations, medical procedures, and TB treatment/prevention information. Daily checks on the TB Air Monitoring System, room temperatures, and refrigerator temperatures are required. Administrative tasks include maintaining patient charts, arranging sample and medication delivery, monitoring medication inventories, scheduling appointments, and registering patients with specific health services.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certification
  • Six (6) months of medical assistance work experience OR enrollment in a certified Medical Assistant (MA) Program or certification from a valid educational institute
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • This position requires either documented completion of a recognized Medical Assistant (MA) course or proof of current enrollment in such a program from an accredited academic institution or recognized vocational training provider.
  • Current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification is required on the date of appointment.
  • Employee must provide own transportation between facility locations.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
  • This position will require a post-job offer proof of immunization(s) or immunization(s) and/or a TB screening, physical and/or drug screen, which may include respirator fit test.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as a medical assistant.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with electronic health records (EHR).

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the clinic and equipment are cleaned, disinfected, and organized, and that activities conducted within the clinic comply with quality assurance practices, as well as risk management, safety, and infection control procedures
  • Triages patients, takes readings of vital signs, draws blood samples, performs CLIA-waived tests, and assists patients to complete mandatory information and consent forms prior to consultation and examination by the registered nurse case manager
  • Assists case managers with examinations, medical procedures, and treatment of patients including, but not limited to dispensing medication and providing information on the treatment and prevention of TB
  • Performs daily checks on the TB Air Monitoring System, room temperatures, and the laboratory and medication refrigerators’ temperatures to ensure they are set within the recommended optimal range
  • Performs various administrative tasks including, but not limited to maintaining patients’ medical charts and files, arranging collection and delivery of laboratory samples and patient’s medication, monitoring and recording medication inventories, scheduling consultations, x-rays, and routine TB-related tests for patients, and registering patients with emocha Health and Straight Talk Prevention Services
