About The Position

The Medical Assistant functions in a support role to the Clinical Nurse Manager by providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned. This role requires the ability to multitask while focusing on details such as proper patient identification for safety and correct specimen labeling in accordance with hospital policy and laboratory procedures. The Medical Assistant supports the mission, vision, and philosophy of the institution.

Requirements

  • High school Diploma.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program from an approved school or two years of experience working as a medical assistant.
  • Two years of experience working as a medical assistant.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program from an approved school or equivalent.
  • Heartsaver/BLS Certification from American Heart Association.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical Assistant Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the primary care provider and specialists with physical examinations.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms and prepare them for examination.
  • Assist with patient disrobing and dressing to ensure safety and comfort.
  • Accurately record patient vital signs, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and weight.
  • Order and restock supplies in patient examination rooms.
  • Rotate and check examination rooms for expired supplies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and necessary supplies in examination rooms to ensure JCAHO and DOH compliance.
  • Perform venipuncture, including preparing supplies, verifying patient identification, and observing procedures.
  • Make copies of EKG tracings if needed and distribute them according to policy.
  • Instruct patients on the collection of laboratory specimens (urinalysis, cultures, 24-hour collections) and label specimens.
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of departmental equipment for preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain electrocardiogram and laboratory supplies, re-ordering and re-stocking as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of medical records and prepare relevant department records and statistics.
  • Coordinate referrals to specialists.
  • Coordinate medical clearance for pre-surgical patients.
  • Maintain a monthly log of surgical patients.
  • Maintain a monthly log for pap smears and mammography.
  • Assist with the preparation of lab slips, specialty appointments, and other patient paperwork.
  • Maintain established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety standards, and infection control procedures.
  • Daily check of refrigerator temperature logs.
  • Daily check that specimens are picked up in accordance with courier service schedules.
  • Check at the end of the shift that all specimens were picked up.
  • Assure and maintain a safe, uncluttered, clean environment for patients, staff, and others.
  • Maintain attendance, punctuality, and dress code in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform all other required duties.

  • Salary range of $28.46 - $30.56 Hourly.
