About The Position

The medical assistant performs patient care activities focused on preparing the patient for the visit with the provider. The medical assistant collects patient-specific data i.e. vital signs, height and weight, chief medical complaint, etc. Best practices for customer service are integral to the interactions which medical assistant have with patients. Alerting the provider to potential medical emergencies and the follow-up of missed appointments are also part of the role of the medical assistant plays as a member of the clinical team. The patients under care of this position may range in ages: Infants & Toddler: 0 – 4, Pre-school/School age, Adolescents: 15 – 18, Adult 18 – 65 years old, Geriatrics: Over 65 years old.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Graduate of NYS approved school/college for medical assistant studies
  • Ability to comprehend routine activities and problem-solve with assistance form supervisor
  • Ability to speak, read and comprehend English.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers, fractions and decimals
  • Basic Life support (BLS)

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient interview and intake
  • Maintains hand hygiene and all infection control practices
  • Prepare exam rooms for clinical visit
  • Obtain vital signs and specimens (urine, throat swabs, etc.)
  • Perform diagnostic testing including electrocardiograms, blood sugar measurement, hearing and vision screening
  • Translate patient information and communication to the patient
  • Participate in all fire drills, codes of all types
  • Restock supply room and maintain need environment for supplies
  • Obtain HIV and Bronx RHIO consents
  • Maintain all patient care equipment in operational order
  • Attend unit, department and special meetings as scheduled
  • Provide great customer service as evident by professional dress and respectful communication with patients and coworkers
