About The Position

The Ophthalmic Medical Assistant plays a vital role in supporting physicians by collecting comprehensive clinical data and performing delegated ophthalmic testing. This position ensures patients receive accurate evaluations and compassionate care while maintaining efficient clinical workflow.

  • Professional verbal and written communication skills

  • Comfort with electronic medical records and clinical technology

Nice To Haves

  • post-secondary education preferred
  • One to two years of experience in ophthalmology or as a certified ophthalmic assistant preferred
  • Valid ophthalmic assistant certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Orients new patients to office protocols and clinical procedures
  • Collects and documents comprehensive patient histories, including ocular, medical, medication, allergy, and family history
  • Performs accurate clinical measurements and documentation in a timely manner
  • Supports ophthalmic photography needs, including fundus, anterior segment, and external imaging
  • Determines testing order for patients in coordination with clinical priorities
  • Works closely with front desk staff to manage patient flow
  • Adjusts testing sequences as needed to maintain efficiency
  • Keeps patients informed about next steps and providers they will see
  • Escorts patients throughout testing and clinical areas
  • Troubleshoots ophthalmic equipment and reports unresolved issues to management
  • Conducts archiving per manufacturer guidelines
  • Performs autoclaving and ensures ongoing instrument sterility
  • Seeks guidance appropriately and practices within scope of training
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of exam and procedure rooms
  • Monitors and replenishes exam room supplies
  • Completes additional tasks as assigned to support clinic operations
