About The Position

Provides medical assistant services to patients and families, assists physicians and mid-level practitioners (providers) with patient care. Performs all clinical functions in a physician’s office, including but not limited to: assisting the physician with treatments, obtaining and processing specimens, maintaining medical information, stocking supplies, patient education, obtaining histories and vitals, triaging patient calls, processing prescription refills, communicating results, and handling prior authorizations, telephone answering, and appointment scheduling as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a medical assistant program with certification.
  • Sufficient experience may be substituted for the educational requirement.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • Ability to accurately type and be efficient with data entry equipment.
  • Ability to apply appropriate rules of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of computers is a necessity.
  • Ability to prioritize activities, organize work, and problem-solve.
  • Above average to excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate with the public by telephone and in person.
  • Ability to deal with anxious and angry people.
  • Ability to communicate with Administrative Staff, Managers, Attorneys, Physicians, and all hospital staff with due respect and tact.
  • Understanding of confidentiality rules is a must without exception.
  • Current BLS Healthcare Provider card.

  • Work with minimal direction and assistance and frequent interruptions.

  • May come in contact with blood or body fluids so knowledge of aseptic technique and infection prevention i.e. PPE and hand washing imperative.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patients for provider visits by gathering reason for visit, history, symptoms, problems, weight, height, vital signs, medications, and allergies.
  • Administers medications, including vaccinations, as ordered by a physician.
  • Assists physicians with procedures as requested.
  • Notifies patients of lab and test results.
  • Collects specimens and performs limited on-site lab tests as ordered by a physician.
  • Performs tests as ordered by a physician.
  • Maintains equipment and controls, including refrigerator temperatures.
  • Ensures patient and equipment safety.
  • Communicates and interacts effectively with patients, families, physicians, peers, and other health team members.
  • Assists in facilitating smooth patient flow and greets patients and families courteously.
  • Maintains good communication with physicians and coworkers.
  • Ensures adequate medical supplies and medications are available and stocked appropriately.
  • Sterilizes instruments and instrument packs if applicable.
  • Maintains inventory of drug samples, rotates stock, and checks expiration dates monthly.
  • Receives prescription refill calls and sends them to the pharmacy under physician supervision, documenting them in the patient record by the end of the business day.
  • Ensures documentation in medical records is complete, including lot numbers for vaccines and samples.
  • Performs administrative duties such as appointment scheduling, telephone etiquette, message taking, recalling patients, handling mail, obtaining authorizations, and collecting co-payments and self-payments.
  • Maintains exam rooms and workstations, ensuring cleanliness.
  • Triage patient clinical calls.
  • Performs venipuncture as ordered by the provider if applicable.
  • Schedules tests or procedures for patients as appropriate.
  • Administers various vaccinations to patients as directed by a physician.
  • Maintains medical information, filing, and/or scanning.
  • Utilizes EMR systems such as Meditech, Medisoft, or Medisoft Clinical EMR.
  • Follows appropriate chain of command for reporting issues.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and treats others with respect.
  • Offers assistance to other staff when able.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
