Requirements

  • High School diploma or Equivalent.
  • Attended an approved medical assistant training program, a copy of the diploma or transcripts are on file, by one of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or The Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.
  • Attended an unapproved training program and successfully passes the medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by either the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute and a copy of that certification is on file.
  • Directly supervised by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours prior to February 2000. (Letter from physician, physician group, or physician assistant must be on file)
  • Completed a medical services training program of the Armed Forces of the United States and a copy of that certificate is on file.
  • Completed an unapproved medical assistant training program and was employed as a medical assistant after program completion, prior to February of 2000.
  • BLS through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Able to communicate effectively with others; manage multiple priorities and tasks, to maintain attention to detail.
  • Able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocol.
  • Knowledge of/ able to implement direct care, newborn through geriatric.
  • Knowledge of/able to use basic medical terminology.
  • Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors.
  • Incumbent must be able to consistently reach and/or work above and below shoulder level; lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to walk/be on feet 90% of day with frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, standing.
  • Able to sit at desk 10% of day; communicate using telephone.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years’ experience as a medical assistant in a clinical outpatient setting.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for patient care under the direct supervision (in the office suite or exam room) of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Responsible for maintaining all applicable KHI Policies and Procedures.
  • Escorts patients to exam room and prepares patient for exam including vital signs, history, and reason for seeking care.
  • Cross trains in data entry, balancing of accounts, charges fees and collect payments due.
  • Schedules/confirms appointments.
  • Maintains and facilitates communication between patients, family and clinical staff.
  • Reports as necessary to Public Health at direction of provider.
  • Maintains work area including exam rooms, supplies, medication and immunizations.
  • Performs CLIA waived lab tests and obtains specimens; performs proficiency testing and runs controls for waived tests; may perform venipuncture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
