About The Position

A Medical Assistant performs routine clerical and clinical tasks within the clinic, assisting Physicians and other licensed providers to provide cost effective, quality patient care. This position is for the Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Clinic at Intermountain Medical Center. The role involves a 20-hour work week, with clinic hours from Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Scheduled shifts will be Tuesday through Friday, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Prior direct patient care or Medical Assistant (MA) experience is highly preferred. The selected candidate will be required to attend a weekly Medical Assistant Staff Meeting every Thursday from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm.

Requirements

  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Satisfactorily completes applicable competency assessments/skills checklists within 90 days of hire/transfer.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or one with which Intermountain Healthcare has a valid affiliation agreement - or - three years of Medical Assistant experience in an outpatient clinic or other healthcare setting -or- successful completion of an accredited LPN or RN program and a current LPN or RN license.
  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic clerical and office duties including assembling necessary documents and supplies, using computer applications, scheduling and coordinating appointments, inpatient and outpatient admissions, tests, treatments, and procedures, maintaining medical records and other information, and maintaining and restocking inventory of supplies.
  • Performs business and financial duties including assigning procedural and diagnostic coding, conducting pre-authorizations and referrals, and facilitating timely billing by completing necessary documentation.
  • Performs clinical functions including prioritizing patient needs through various communication channels, recognizing and responding to emergency situations, preparing and maintaining examination and treatment areas, performing complete intake process (chief complaint, history, vital signs, height, weight, OFC, care process model data, etc.), administering screening tests (visual tests, audiology, spirometry, EKGs), assisting providers with examinations and procedures, providing patient education as directed, reporting significant changes in patient condition to the Physician, and following provider instructions for pharmacy refills, scheduling procedures, obtaining and reporting lab results, and distributing faxes.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives (i.e. CQI, TQM, Lean, 100% participation, etc.).
