About The Position

The Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology is seeking a Medical Assistant. This role involves a variety of clinical and administrative duties to support patient care and clinic operations.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Certification/registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required.
  • If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/registered within 180 days (6 months) of date of hire.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Experience using EPIC.

Responsibilities

  • Complete Medicare Wellness Questionnaire and other questionnaires in EPIC.
  • Assist Clinical RN with ED discharge calls when necessary.
  • Complete Prior-Authorizations for medications.
  • Collect patient information and assessment data, including vital signs.
  • Report assessment findings to the practitioner and document in a timely manner.
  • Perform chart review prior to clinic visits to gather historical data, check for metric gaps in care, and identify needs for Medicare Wellness Visits.
  • Assist patients to exam rooms and prepare them for examinations and diagnostic procedures.
  • Monitor patient status and report any abnormal findings or changes in condition.
  • Prepare and maintain examination or treatment areas.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and infection control principles.
  • Operate clinical equipment according to procedure.
  • Recognize emergency situations and implement emergency procedures, including administering first aid and CPR.
  • Confirm and clarify written orders before implementation.
  • Prepare and administer medications, including injections, as directed by a physician.
  • Perform in-office point of care tests.
  • Provide lab services, including obtaining and managing specimens.
  • Perform quality controls for waived testing and act as a trainer for waived testing.
  • Assist physicians with examinations and procedures, including chaperoning sensitive exams.
  • Stock and maintain exam rooms and clinic areas with necessary supplies, medications, and equipment.
  • Prepare lists of needed supplies and medications for monthly orders.
  • Perform skilled tasks such as venipuncture, suture removal, and wound dressing changes.
  • Document tasks performed and nursing care data accurately in Epic.
  • Assist patients with transfers to and from exam tables, procedure tables, and scales.
  • Retrieve and process messages from the prescription refill line, take and relay messages, and facilitate interaction between patient and provider.
  • Work with providers to ensure smooth and efficient patient flow.
  • Notify manager and patients of wait times.
  • Participate in the medical education of patients and families.
  • Provide patient instruction for medication administration, diagnostic tests, specimen collection, and health promotion/disease prevention.
  • Obtain and provide health information for patient use as requested by the physician.
  • Assist with the orientation of new staff members.
  • Participate in the clinic's quality assurance programs and committees.
  • Ensure proper disposal of needle containers and potentially infectious waste.
  • Perform minor housekeeping tasks to keep clinic areas clean and safe.
  • Maintain Clorox and germicidal solutions for emergency cleanups.
  • Check clinic areas for malfunctioning equipment and maintenance problems, and report or arrange for repairs.
  • Participate in skill development and training through in-service programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
