About The Position

The Medical Assistant will adhere to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, follow all policies and procedures, and maintain training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care. This role involves performing rooming/visit tasks, assisting providers with procedures, handling lab-related duties, performing Point of Care testing, administering medications and vaccines, and completing various administrative and clinical tasks. The Medical Assistant will also demonstrate effective communication, teamwork, and maintain a clean and stocked work environment. They may also assist with training, onboarding, and serve as a role champion or on a committee. The position requires the ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent (structured military training, EMT with specific experience, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years, depending on division).
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (may need to be obtained within 45 days for some divisions).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by a specified national organization (list varies by division).
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
  • May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
