About The Position

Tanner Clinic has an immediate opening for a Medical Assistant. This role is responsible for ensuring patient satisfaction by attending to their medical needs as determined by the attending physician. The Medical Assistant will perform vital signs, obtain patient medical histories, and handle prior authorizations for prescriptions and procedures. Maintaining strict patient, computer, and company confidentiality is essential. The position involves fulfilling patient care responsibilities such as managing schedules, assisting with patient flow, handling prescription requests, accompanying patients, performing screenings, assisting physicians/nurses, charting, relaying instructions, and answering calls. Organizational responsibilities include respecting patient rights, responding to emergency codes, and reporting issues to supervisors. Clinical responsibilities may include medical/surgical asepsis, drug administration, minor surgery assistance, biohazard waste disposal, CLIA-waived testing, specimen collection and handling, and electrocardiography. Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory. Placing IVs is permitted only with an IV certification or proper trainer sign-off. Staff must be fully trained and capable of functioning in all capacities of the job, with additional training available if needed.

Requirements

  • Current documentation of a national certification for the registered medical assistant (RMA) or for the certified assistant through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Will consider graduates from accredited programs.
  • Must possess a current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (hepatitis B and tuberculosis).
  • Recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant and/or documented evidence of externship completed in a medical office preferred.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Must be capable of handling multiple tasks effectively and able to maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate compassion and understanding for the patient and caring parties.
  • Possess pleasant and effective written, verbal, and telephone communication skills.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of the job
  • Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding.
  • Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.
  • Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to particular medical practice.
  • Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.
  • Skill in using computers.
  • Skill in performing medical assistance tasks appropriately.
  • Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families.
  • Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
  • Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper patient satisfaction by attending to their medical needs as determined by the attending physician.
  • Perform vital signs and obtain patient medical histories.
  • Obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions and procedures.
  • Maintain strict patient, computer, and company confidentiality.
  • Fulfill patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; fulfill prescription requests; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; venipunctures and specimen collection in preparing for exam; obtaining patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information.
  • Fulfill organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor.
  • Fulfill clinical medical assisting responsibilities, which may include medical/surgical asepsis; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician’s orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post-surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography, emergency triage, and first aid. Medical assistants must adhere to the MA scope of practice in the laboratory.
  • Place IV’s – only with an IV certification or properly passed off by trainer
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Staff must have full training and be able to function in all capacities, departments, and requirements of the job. If staff are not comfortable with certain tasks, additional training can be arranged.
