About The Position

The Express Care Medical Assistant is a member of the care delivery team that functions under the direction of, and be assistive to, a licensed professional, to provide delegated, direct patient care intervention. The Express Care Medical Assistant responsibilities include, but are not limited to, rooming patients, taking vital signs, monitor the patient for issues or changes in condition and to report those issues/changes to the licensed professional. Displays excellent communication and customer service skills, educates and answers patient questions during visit and at discharge. The Express Care Medical Assistant is responsible for coordination of tests and services, assisting providers with procedures, and accurate documentation of all patient related activities. The Express Care Medical Assistant may also perform procedures and testing under indirect physician supervision. Responsible to provide a safe environment for his/her assigned patients; to complete the assigned work; and to document and report any pertinent observations as a result of the interventions. Making independent clinical decisions is outside of the scope for this position. Refer clinical questions to the provider or nurse.

Requirements

  • Successfully completed first semester in an accredited nursing program.
  • Successfully completed a medical assistant or patient care technician program.
  • A Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician may be substituted for the educational requirement.
  • Experience in an office or clinic setting.
  • Knowledgeable of and follows proper technique for patient care.
  • Communicates pertinent patient information to appropriate staff in a timely manner.
  • Functions with an awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution.
  • Participates actively in educational activities for department.
  • Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills.
  • Active certification to practice in Kansas as either Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, Registered Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician is required as a substitute for education qualifications.
  • First Responder - RQI Required within 90 days.

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients
  • Taking vital signs
  • Monitor the patient for issues or changes in condition and to report those issues/changes to the licensed professional

  • Implement identified plan through coordination of care with interdisciplinary care team to employ strategies to promote health and wellness
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary care team encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes
  • Communicate pertinent data and information relative to the patient, situation, or setting in a timely manner
  • Promote infection prevention through use of standard precautions, proper procedure in dressing changes, wound care, hand hygiene and cleanliness of the patient rooms/department
  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’S), accurate measurement and recording of weight, height, vital signs and report any changes to licensed professional
  • Deliver care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring illustrated by creating caring relationships, taking time to have uninterrupted moments with patients and displaying unconditional acceptance and respect
  • Promote a mutually respectful environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and supports the effectiveness of professional relationships and integrates ethics in all aspects of practice
  • Demonstrate advocacy in all roles and settings
  • Practice Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles in their daily work by respecting others’ uniqueness, perspectives, backgrounds or beliefs
  • Communicate effectively in all areas of professional practice
  • Mentor Medical Assistants new to their role for the purpose of ensuring successful enculturation, orientation, competence, and emotional support
  • Support students to enhance their knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Commit to lifelong learning through critical thinking, self-reflection, and inquiry for personal growth and development
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in process of evolution the scope of the Stormont Vail Health professional practice model
  • Utilize appropriate resources to provide, and sustain evidence-based nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible, and used judiciously
  • Comply with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
  • Performs other duties as assigned
