The Medical Assistant (MA) in Podiatry and Orthopedics is responsible for adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care. This role performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings. The MA assists providers with or performs procedures as ordered, and handles lab-related duties including venipuncture, specimen collection, and results tracking. They also perform Point of Care testing (POCT) and administer medications and vaccines safely. Additional duties may include medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals. The MA will be cross-trained to perform relevant duties within the scope of practice for the specialty or clinic. This role requires effective communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation, as well as maintaining a clean and well-stocked work environment. The MA must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate for the age of the patients served, understanding principles of growth and development over the lifespan.
