Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program or completion of an U.S. Armed Forces medical services training program.
  • Candidates who completed a program prior to February 2, 2000 can satisfy the minimum education requirements by providing evidence of direct supervision by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2000 hours to satisfy the education requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience with computer programs utilized for checking-in and scheduling patients required.
  • American Heart Association BLS

Responsibilities

  • Provides basic level of patient care and treatments.
  • Assists with obtaining vital signs, documents chief complaint and all actions taken.
  • Alerts physician of problems/concerns/abnormalities.
  • Assists with obtaining patient history, assists physicians and residents and/or licensed nursing personnel.
  • Performs simple patient procedures, sets up exam/procedure rooms including instruments for minor procedures, prepares and may include administering medications (excluding IV) under direct supervision of a physician.
  • Obtains lab specimen and fills out requisitions completely and accurately.
  • Obtains authorization for referral (normally in small clinics).
  • Conducts front desk duties such as registration, check-in and scheduling of patients.
  • Maintains hospital standards of zero tolerance for mislabeled specimens and collects laboratory specimens according to hospital protocol.
  • Assists the nurse/physician during examinations, treatments and procedures as requested.
  • Retrieves necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in patient/equipment preparation.
  • Performs follow-up actions as directed.
  • Completes hospital forms per protocol.
  • Documents clinically relevant findings in the patient's record according to hospital protocols and clinical protocols.
  • Monitors and records patient vital signs, weight, positioning, ADL's I&O activity and blood glucose readings per RN instructions, hospital protocols, and standards of care.
  • Records readings in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assists with patient admission, discharge and transfer.
