About The Position

The Medical Assistant will obtain patient information and vital signs, assist the physician with patient follow-up calls, screen and follow-up with patient test results; maintain medical record information; coordinate patient care information with other health care providers; and obtain prior authorizations. Phone responsibilities may include answering the phone, creating telephone encounters, directing callers to the appropriate person/department, taking messages and scheduling appointments for the patients. The Medical Assistant may provide coverage for clerical positions as needed. This position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration or LPN required
  • BLS for the Healthcare Provider 60 days after hire required

Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient information and vital signs
  • Assist the physician with patient follow-up calls
  • Screen and follow-up with patient test results
  • Maintain medical record information
  • Coordinate patient care information with other health care providers
  • Obtain prior authorizations
  • Answer the phone, create telephone encounters, direct callers, take messages, and schedule appointments
  • Provide coverage for clerical positions as needed
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served
  • Maintain a confidential and safe patient focused office
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patient emergencies via phone and in the office
  • Apply site specific clinical screening tools
  • Obtain and update patient information and vital signs
  • Use standard protocol to order appropriate lab testing for patient care
  • Refill prescriptions per office protocol
  • Coordinate referrals and testing
  • Review the After Visit Summary with the patient and family to ensure comprehension
  • Work in conjunction with the provider to create a patient focused care team
  • Anticipate and support the providers, allowing the providers to focus on clinical productivity
  • Coordinate communication between the patient, provider and care team
  • Deliver pertinent information to the provider
  • Screen calls, gather information for the provider, as appropriate, and communicate with patients in a professional manner
  • Assure confidential questionnaires are completed and all necessary forms are signed
  • Schedule appointments, notify the providers of cancellations, and fill time slots to maximize physician productivity
  • Provide accurate and timely information back to the patient as indicated by the care team
  • Follow protocols to schedule same day and urgent visits
  • Perform all clinical functions as directed by the physician
  • Document and update patient information in the medical record
  • Reconcile and document patient medication logs at each visit
  • Maintain appropriate documentation log for clinical equipment, point of care testing, and sample medication log, if applicable
  • Manage overdues, recalls and actions within the EMR
  • File or scan records in an accessible, confidential and secure system
  • Support the quality improvement activities of the facility and respond appropriately to change
  • Participate in learning experiences as appropriate
  • Manage the office specific registry to identify patient care gaps
  • Ensure compliance with policy, procedure and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain patient rights, confidentiality and ethical billing practices
  • Identify communication needs of referral sources and assure that they receive information in a timely manner
