About The Position

Valley-Wide Health Systems, Inc. is seeking two dedicated Medical Assistants to join their team at the Convenient Care Community Clinic in Alamosa, CO. The role involves both administrative and clinical duties, ensuring efficient patient flow and high-quality care delivery within a non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) environment.

Requirements

  • Medical assistant training (school or on the job training, proof of education) required.
  • One-year medical office experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of equipment and technology used in the nursing area.
  • BLS certification/training and certification.
  • Sensitivity to low income, vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to work as a team member, maintain a professional relationship and positive attitude with others.
  • Displays enthusiasm toward the work and the mission of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients, keeping medical records up to date (abstracting), answering the telephone and taking phone messages.
  • Evaluate potential emergencies and work them into the schedule as necessary when the schedule is full.
  • Collaborate with the case manager/referral coordinator and operator on completing insurance forms, making appointments, handling correspondence, and scheduling hospital and laboratory services.
  • Assist the billing department with completing incomplete/missing information in a timely manner.
  • Check in patients for scheduled visits, including vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, height, weight, BMI, assessment of pain, LMP, Medications, Allergies, HPI, chief complaint and past health history on all new patients), retrieving patient history if applicable (prior labs, x-rays) and assessing patient needs.
  • Provide patient services not requiring a provider, according to established protocol.
  • Record any contact with patients in the chart (Patient identifiers verified prior to any documentation).
  • Perform point of care testing and treatments, according to established protocol.
  • Participate in quarterly lab proficiency testing.
  • Review lab and other reports and administer proper follow-through.
  • Send written notice to patients according to established protocols (e.g., pap smears, immunizations).
  • Prepare rooms for procedures and assist providers as necessary.
  • Check and stock rooms daily for adequate supplies.
  • Schedule x-rays or other diagnostic tests and provide patient education for exam preparation.
  • Ensure equipment and supplies are ready as necessary for procedures and minor surgery (e.g., pap, biopsies, I and D’s, laceration repair, toenail removal).
  • Ensure proper sterilization procedures are followed.
  • Prepare and administer medication orally, intramuscularly, sublingually, intravenously (if applicable) using excellent technique.
  • Calculate drug doses accurately (Yearly medication calculation competency).
  • Send tasks to RX refill nurses as needed.
  • Participate in Patient Education, having materials and handouts readily available or able to retrieve information from the internet.
  • Request support from professional staff when required.
  • Assist other teams when needed.
  • Respond to “Flags” and add to the workgroup of the clinic assigned to for the day.
  • Maintain and complete inbox for a nurse out sick or if you are the extra nurse for the clinic.
  • Assist in overall operations of the assigned clinic.
  • Perform monthly inventory.
  • Ensure proper care of equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with the orientation of new medical assistants.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Check and sign off on crash carts regularly in compliance with protocol.
  • Participate in continuing education on a regular basis and as offered.
  • Be supportive and attend in-services provided by VWHS.
  • Be knowledgeable about emergency calls and maintain current CPR.
  • Complete and pass annual competency assessments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Floating is a requirement of all MA levels to assist in prioritizing patient care and access as needed.
  • Ability to complete all duties and responsibilities outlined in step I & II beyond immediate supervision.
  • Utilize the “Lead Nurse” when a patient cannot be worked into the schedule and/or further medical decision-making is needed.
  • Perform additional patient interventions as deemed competent.
  • Support RN Lead with nursing policies, procedures, and workflows being up to date and followed.
  • Perform schedule scrub for the next day.
  • Lead huddles (If there is no RN Lead or Practice Manager in clinic).
  • Patient lesson planning.
  • Assist within their pods with additional needs.
  • Take a lead for daily/monthly duties oversight.
  • Comply with all CLIA, AAHC, and other certifying or accrediting agency regulations and standards.
