About The Position

This is a temporary Medical Assistant position focused on enhancing the quality of life for individuals in the greater Los Angeles area by providing high-quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare services. The role involves assisting patients in understanding provider recommendations, performing patient care functions, managing medical calls, updating medical records, and supporting treatment continuity. The Medical Assistant will be a key part of the back office team, reporting to the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Certificate, required.
  • Current CPR Certification - required to be kept up to date.

Nice To Haves

  • FQHC experience, highly preferred.
  • Computer knowledge preferred (e.g., NextGen (E.H.R. & PMS), Microsoft Word and Excel).
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and familiarity with the Hispanic culture.
  • Ability to speak Spanish, preferred.
  • Knowledge of the following (but not limited to), preferred: My Health LA, PPO’s, HMO’s, Medicare, Family PACT, CPSP, Medi-Cal, Fee-for-Service, CHDP, Managed Care Plans, Every Woman Counts.

Responsibilities

  • Participates with the medical/interdisciplinary team to coordinate and facilitate patient flow and chart management.
  • Maintains a positive, self-motivated attitude at all times.
  • Performs point of care glucose testing and spot hemoglobin, documenting performance and results in the EHR.
  • Assists with obtaining authorizations for services, ensuring all required medical justification is collated and submitted.
  • Escorts patients from the reception area to all patient areas (consult room, exam room, procedure room, lab draw room, check out).
  • Reviews healthcare questionnaires for completeness and obtains any missing information.
  • Notifies the treating provider when patients are ready to be seen and expedites smooth patient flow.
  • Consistently ensures all patient care areas are kept clean and tidy; changes beds (paper/linen) after each patient encounter, removes soiled linen, and ensures clean linen is always available.
  • Proactively prepares supplies and equipment for minor procedures (e.g., biopsies, injections, suture removal, wound debridement).
  • Conducts a weekly check of supplies to ensure none are expired.
  • Checks all sharps container receptacles on a daily basis and ensures any full containers are replaced and stored appropriately.
  • Ensures all patient identifying information is HIPAA compliant; removes any patient identifying information and ensures it is scanned into the EHR or placed in the confidential bin for shredding.
  • Reports any issues with broken equipment and ensures it is removed and sent for repairs.
  • Schedules ordered tests as appropriate.
  • Answers telephone calls, explains clinic process, fee schedules, and services to clients.
  • Provides general information to callers and refers calls to the provider when necessary.
  • Informs patients and/or parent/guardian regarding services, contraindications, procedures, and after-care instructions, or counsels based on payer requirements.
  • Assists clients in completing medical history and medical program intake forms, and/or consents, ensuring the patient understands when obtaining patient signature.
  • Reviews patient chart for completeness, errors, signatures, and appropriate assembly.
  • Measures, records in NextGen, and reports vital signs, weight, and height to the provider in the electronic healthcare record.
  • Assists clinicians with medical examinations as needed.
  • Makes and documents appropriate referrals and forwards them to the referrals clerk to ensure patient care and compliance.
  • Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Gives injections or treatments, and performs routine laboratory tests.
  • Ensures that all necessary equipment is available in the rooms.
  • Ensures that labs are sent to the correct laboratories, according to the patient insurance.
  • Able to cover all departments: Pediatrics, Women’s Health, General Medicine.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests or calls medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests.
  • Consistently checks the oxygen tank on a weekly basis.
  • Ensures the crash cart has been checked on a monthly basis.
  • Identifies, initiates, and implements measures to deliver high-quality care to patients and improve services.
  • Responds efficiently and timely to all patient and provider staff needs and inquiries.
  • Ensures excellent customer service to all FHCCGLA patients.
  • Works with operations managers to manage patient scheduling and flow to address bottlenecks and scheduling issues.
  • Handles patient grievances according to FHCCGLA’s Policy & Procedure.
  • Assists in developing, updating, and reviewing FHCCGLA Policies & Procedures (P&P’s) as needed.
  • Ensures HIPAA compliance by maintaining strict confidentiality of all patient data and EHR/PMS according to regulations and FHCCGLA’s P&P’s.
  • Attends mandatory quarterly staff meetings/trainings, Corporate Risk Management meetings, Clinical & Operations (C&O) meetings, meetings with FHCCGLA’s Executive Leadership, and other pertinent meetings as scheduled.
  • Remains informed of current legal and regulatory changes related to scope of practice, specific programs/payors, insurances accepted, services offered at FHCCGLA, and all applicable Policies & Procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
