About The Position

The Medical Assistant will be responsible for bringing patients to the nursing station, taking vital signs, recording information in the EHR, obtaining patient history, reviewing medical records, obtaining laboratory specimens, performing tests, escorting patients to exam rooms, preparing patients for examination, assisting with procedures, identifying and notifying providers of emergency situations, assisting in emergencies and minor surgeries, participating in PI activities, performing clerical duties, providing patient education, assisting with scheduling, encouraging patient portal use, managing inventory and supplies, maintaining exam rooms, managing drug samples, preparing laboratory specimens for pick-up, preparing laboratory/imaging results for scanning, reporting communicable diseases, following up on abnormal lab findings, maintaining proficiency in procedures like EKGs and lab procedures, performing quality controls and calibrations, cleaning the lab area, assisting with patient surveys, participating in performance improvement activities, and performing CLIA waivered tests. The role also requires knowledge of human growth and development across the lifespan to meet patient needs.

Responsibilities

  • Bring patients to the nursing station within fifteen minutes of their scheduled appointment taking vital signs (ht, wt, bp, p, resp, and temp) error free, and recording them in the patients EHR.
  • Review and update allergies in EHR.
  • Obtain a brief patient history and record pertinent information in the patient’s EHR.
  • Review medical records and report any pertinent information to clinicians (e.g., lab, x-ray results).
  • Obtain laboratory specimens as ordered in previous office notes (where applicable) after a brief history is recorded and perform necessary testing prior to the PA/FNP/MD seeing the patient.
  • Escort the patient to the exam room and prepare the patient for the PA/FNP/MD as exam rooms become available, having the patient undress appropriately for the exam (placing a clean gown on exam table when necessary).
  • Provide privacy for the patient before and during exam.
  • Obtain lab specimens, perform blood draws, give injections (according to standard procedures and practices); or perform procedures as ordered by the PA/FNP/MD, recording the said results into the patient’s EHR in the correct place, error free.
  • Identify emergency situations and notify the PA/FNP/MD immediately.
  • Assist PA/FNP/MD in emergencies, laceration repairs, or minor surgery, as directed.
  • Be involved in on going PI activities to improve quality of care.
  • Perform other clerical duties as needed.
  • After making the referral for patients, give clear, concise, adequate information as to the date, time, location, and preparation required.
  • Any other information pertinent to the patient should be discussed and given to the patient prior to leaving the practice, if applicable.
  • Check emergency medical supplies according to policy to ensure dates have not expired.
  • Provide medical education to patients as directed by the PA/FNP/MD (i.e., review medication with patients and inform the providers of any medications that require refill prescriptions.
  • Assist Patient Service Specialist with appropriate scheduling for visit.
  • Encourage use of patient portal.
  • Check inventory weekly, keep inventory stocked, and rotate items as new inventory items come to the office.
  • Keep exam rooms neat and stocked with supplies.
  • Keep drug sample area neat.
  • Prepare laboratory specimens collected daily for hospital courier pick-up by 3:00pm, or as otherwise applicable to individual center.
  • Prepare laboratory/imaging results and patient notes received from outside sources to be sent to HIM for scanning.
  • Ensuring that the PA/FNP/MD has reviewed, initialed, and dated the paperwork.
  • Report any STD or communicable disease to the local Health Department (county in which patient resides), according to policy.
  • Follow-up with patients who have abnormal lab findings.
  • Maintain proficiency in all procedures performed at the clinic, including EKGs and lab procedures.
  • Complete and maintain quality controls and calibrations as directed by the supplier’s manuals and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Clean the lab area daily, using disinfectant as needed, and keep it orderly.
  • Assist in maintaining an effective patient survey process.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities to enhance the quality of care and service.
  • Perform CLIA waivered tests.
  • Staff members will have knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and have the ability to meet the needs of and provide the care of these patients.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
