The Medical Assistant (MA) is a multi-skilled clinical professional responsible for providing indirect and/or direct patient care within their scope of practice and in alignment with the standards of excellence and quality at Roper St. Francis Healthcare. Under the direction of a provider, the MA contributes to addressing the patient's chief complaint by taking vital signs (respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature), documenting patient/family needs, participating in care planning and implementation, and administering ordered medications (oral, injection, topically, etc.) within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines. This role requires adherence to legal responsibilities, identification of significant changes in patient condition, troubleshooting issues, and escalating problems as needed. The MA must maintain clinical and administrative skills, prepare patients for physician examinations, and may be required to travel to various clinics within the tri-county area or adjust hours to meet patient care needs. A safe and supportive environment is maintained through proper organization and functioning of the work area, exam rooms, and equipment. The MA also assists with virtual health visits, including setup, pre-charting, patient preparedness, and troubleshooting. Accurate documentation in electronic medical records (EMR) and management of in-basket messages are crucial. Additional duties may include front desk workflows, managing orders, appointments, referrals, collecting co-pays, ordering supplies, tracking labs and tests, and proper disposal of contaminated supplies.
