About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) in Internal Medicine plays a crucial role in patient care by adhering to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining competency. This role involves performing essential patient visit tasks such as taking vital signs, reconciling medications, reviewing medical history and allergies, and conducting screenings for various health and social factors. The MA will also assist providers with procedures, manage laboratory duties including venipuncture and specimen handling, and perform Point of Care testing. Additionally, the position involves administering medications and vaccines safely, completing administrative tasks like medication refills and insurance authorizations, and maintaining a clean and well-stocked work environment. The MA must be knowledgeable about age-specific patient care needs and demonstrate effective communication and teamwork. This is a full-time position with a schedule of Monday and Friday from 7:45 AM to 4:15 PM, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and Thursday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with slight adjustments possible.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest locations).
Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant, or 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent locations).
Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (for Greater Charlotte, Wake Forest locations).
Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required (for IL/WI Divisions, Floyd & Navicent locations).
American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Allied Health (AAH), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Health Career Association (NHA), (MCMA), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA) Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (for Wake Forest location).
Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Nice To Haves

Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas (for Wake Forest location).

Responsibilities

Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
Cross trained to perform duties that are relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant.
Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental job standards.
