About The Position

The Division of Podiatric Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center provides high quality, advanced foot and ankle care in a compassionate environment, both in Boston, and at numerous convenient locations in the community. Our practice in Boston is a high volume, specialty practice that sees nearly 12,000 patients per year and performs more than 800 specialized surgical procedures for a variety of simple and complex conditions. Our foot surgeons are nationally and internationally known for their expertise in diabetic foot care and reconstructive foot surgery. We also conduct podiatry research to improve patient care and train the next generation of podiatrists. The Medical Assistant supports the very busy Boston practice, which is heavily focused on wound care, but also provides reconstructive foots care, complex diabetic foot care, and sports medicine and trauma care. The MA will work alongside of, and take direction from, the Podiatric Surgery Nursing team, to support clinic flow and all aspects of room turn over primarily, while also helping with patient vitals, med reconciliation, and other visit prep supports as allowed within the BIDMC set of MA competencies, and specific to the needs in Podiatry. The ideal candidate must be eager to work in a busy clinic, and enjoy working in an active role as part of a team. They must be well organized, detail oriented, and reliable, and must be able to follow verbal directions from a nursing team, and surgeons. This is a fast paced clinic; the right candidate will be flexible, and enjoy working quickly, and effectively, all day long. They will also be confident and physically strong, as many of our patients require a lot of support and assistance ambulating. Job Description: Job Summary: Supports smooth and efficient practice operations, while contributing to BIDMC's promise of providing extraordinary care. Communicates with patients, other employees and the general public in a courteous, helpful manner by phone and in person. In addition to medical assisting, provides administrative tasks as needed, including but are not limited to greeting, check-in, and scheduling. Assists patients who have physical and psychological limitations with ambulation and patient care functions. Reports to Practice Manager or RN with input from assigned Physicians, Nurses or other health care providers. Department Specific Job Responsibilities: Supports a very busy podiatry clinic by providing Medical Assistant level support to patients during the check in and check out process. MA responsibilities include, but not limited to, rooming the patient, preparing patient for medical exam, supporting medication reconciliation process, and collecting height/weight/vitals. Performs all necessary tasks to ensure rooms are turned over and cleaned, and that equipment is available and clean, ensuring the inventory of equipment in the clinic is also properly managed, and re-ordered when needed. Performs room and equipment set up for common routing procedures such as nail procedures, wart removal, and wound debridement. Performs removal of dressings, bandage changes, and basic wound cleaning/management, including superficial wound cleaning with saline only. Ensure proper protocols and procedures are maintained in clinic, including but not limited to all Joint Commission standards, and Hand Hygiene Protocols.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Medical Assistant Certificate required., or Associates degree in Medical Assisting or demonstrated MA competencies or equivalent MA experience.
  • 0-1 years related work experience required.
  • Basic familiarity with computers.
  • Ability to navigate at a basic level within web-based applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.

  • Performs medical assisting duties which may include, but are not limited to, vital signs, height and weight, EKGs, performing phlebotomy and assisting during routine procedures.
  • Ensures that all patient care areas are clean, organized, stocked and ready for patient use.
  • Escorts patients to ancillary service areas such as radiology and lab as needed.
  • Performs appropriate point of care testing, such as lab tests and specimen collection.
  • Implements quality control standards to ensure proper functioning and accuracy of testing equipment.
  • Provides patients with relevant instructions for specific tests and procedures.
  • Monitors, orders and/or maintains medical equipment and supplies, ensuring they are clean, sterilized, stocked and within expiration dates.
  • Performs initial review of medication lists in the electronic medical record for final review by licensed practitioners.
  • May retrieve schedule VI and over the counter medications only, under supervision of licensed providers; is not authorized to perform licensed personnel duties, which include but are not limited to drawing up medications, medication administration or flushing IVs.
  • Uses the electronic medical record system (OMR) to queue prescription renewals for review by a licensed provider.
  • As directed by a clinician, enters/scribes orders for tests, services or appointments in OMR.
  • During the visit, accurately documents tasks, as they are completed, in OMR to ensure proper billing (Facility Worksheet).
