About The Position

The Medical Assistant participates as a member of the Medical Team by working closely with providers and other departments of the clinic to ensure effective patient care. They are responsible for taking vital signs, recording patient information in the EHR, collaborating with healthcare professionals, ensuring patient satisfaction, and providing age-appropriate care. The role also involves performing various tests and treatments, maintaining exam rooms, performing venipunctures and point-of-care testing, administering vaccinations, cleansing wounds, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Additionally, the Medical Assistant will conduct phone calls to coordinate care, stay knowledgeable about various health programs, adhere to safety and confidentiality protocols, and participate in health conferences and trainings. Upholding a positive work environment and performing other duties as assigned are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science or equivalent work experience.
Valid CPR Certification.
Three years of prior experience in a healthcare field.
Intermediate computer proficiency utilizing Microsoft applications, e-mail, and internet.
Intermediate proficiency with electronic health records.

Responsibilities

Takes vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature) and records height and weight on all patients; obtains simple health histories, records reasons for visit, and ensures all necessary documentation is completed in electronic health record (EHR).
Collaborates with providers and nurses any information and/or observation concerning patient that may influence the patient’s illness, such as abnormal vital signs, abnormal response to patient screening, and/or adverse reactions to medications/blood draws.
Works to ensure patient satisfaction; establishes rapport with patients and delivers care in a professional manner.
Provides care appropriate to the age of the patients served (i.e., infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, or geriatric).
Performs visual acuity, hearing tests, EKGs, and nebulizer treatments as needed.
Ensures all exam rooms are stocked with the necessary equipment needed for patient care.
Performs venipunctures and point-of-care testing as directed by providers’ orders.
Administers vaccinations under the supervision of onsite nurses/providers.
Cleanses minor wounds and changes dressings with direct supervision.
Keeps lab, immunization room, and general department areas neat and clean and disinfects all surfaces daily.
Conducts various phone calls with outside offices, laboratories, insurance offices, pharmacies, intra-departments to assist with coordinating care.
Maintains knowledge of programs provided such as Child Health and Disability Prevention (CHDP), Medi-Cal, Family Planning, Every Woman Counts (EWC), etc.
Adheres to domestic violence and child, dependent, and elder abuse protocols.
Maintains and adheres to confidentiality and privilege communication protocols (e.g., patient, employee, clinic, and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as set forth by SYTHC.
Adheres to of all safety policies and procedures inclusive of infection control rules and regulations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliance, and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Participates in health conferences, committees, and trainings as directed.
