Medical Assistant (2-Month Furlough) - Student Health Engemann Admin - Full Time 8 Hour Rotating Shift (Non-Exempt) (Non-Union)
About The Position
This position involves escorting patients to exam rooms, obtaining and recording vital signs and medication lists, monitoring patient flow, and assisting physicians with minor clinical procedures. The role also includes performing EKGs, preparing patient charts with pertinent medical information, scheduling diagnostic tests, and performing various office and clerical duties. Ensuring patient privacy, safety, and confidentiality, maintaining a safe environment, and complying with infection control policies are key aspects of this role. The position is for a full-time, 8-hour rotating shift, non-exempt, non-union role with a 2-month furlough period.
Requirements
- High school or equivalent
- Graduate from an accredited school of Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only).
Nice To Haves
- 1 year; Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience
- Experience in acute care setting
- Knowledge of specialty medical terminology.
- Familiarity with word processing, IDX, GECB, COR Schuynet, Cerner, ProSolv, EPF, AS400 and scheduling software.
- Spanish language skills.
- Certified Medical Assistant - CMA
Responsibilities
- Determines patient care needs and directs patients accordingly.
- Ensures patient charts are prepared prior to appointment including x-rays and pertinent lab work, makes arrangements to obtain any special equipment needed. Sets up exam rooms, assists physician with exams as needed, monitors patient flow.
- Prepares patients for examinations. Obtains and records vital signs.
- Ensures health care delivery areas are fully stocked, organized, cleaned, and disinfected.
- Maintains files and records, oversees equipment and office supply inventory. Photocopies, collates, faxes, mails. Reads and prioritizes incoming mail. Handles or routes as appropriate.
- Ensures that physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by the appropriate staff.
- Provides coverage/relief for co-workers. Communicates directly with co-workers the status of all patients when providing coverage.
- Assists the physician with exams and procedures.
- Records patient information in chart//EHR according to Joint Commission standards. Maintains a professional demeanor.
- Obtains blood sample specimens by venipuncture or capillary methods in response to requests for testing by clinicians, with appropriate consideration for the age of the patient.
- Receives and screens specimens with regard to acceptability as defined by established guidelines.
- Processes, distributes or packages all specimens received.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
