About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) in the OB/Gynecology Clinic is a part-time position responsible for providing patient care within the scope of practice for a Medical Assistant. This role involves performing various clinical tasks, assisting providers, managing laboratory duties, administering medications, and ensuring a clean and well-stocked work environment. The MA must demonstrate knowledge of patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent (structured military training clinical in nature per DD214, or EMT in lieu of formal MA program for some divisions).
  • For IL/WI Divisions: 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years may substitute for program completion.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required (or obtained within 45 days for some divisions).
  • Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by a specified national organization (AAMA, NHA, NHCWA, NCCT, ARMA, AMT, NAHP, NRMA, CCMA, CMAC, AMCA).
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Two years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills.
  • Must sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel, climb, and reach above shoulders throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds without assistance.
  • Must have functional speech, vision, hearing, and touch with ability to use fine-hand manipulation skills.
  • Will be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, blood and body fluids.
  • Will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.

  • Demonstrates professional practice advancement through professional governance, safety coach, super-user, vaccine coordinator, SPICE or OSHA/IP certificate holder for unit.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks including vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings.
  • Assists providers with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Performs Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes CLIA approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Completes other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment, ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • May assist with training and onboarding of other teammates.
  • May serve as a role champion or on a committee.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
