About The Position

The role of the Medical Assistant is to provide both administrative and clinical support to the clinics. The MA position requires a highly organized individual who can safely manage more than one task at a time and move efficiently throughout varied responsibilities. The MA must be able to work independently as well as interact as part of a team, consistently demonstrating respect and consideration to fellow staff members. The MA is to demonstrate flexibility and be able to provide coverage for the clerical staff when needed. Certain duties may vary based upon office location and department structure.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant degree from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in Medical Assisting.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming phone calls addressing patient requests and scheduling appointments as needed.
  • Contact patient no-shows and reschedule appointments on an as-needed basis.
  • Distribute patient records to the medical staff and prepare new patient charts.
  • Ensure all medical information is accurate and available for review by proper personnel.
  • Process outgoing patient referrals as required.
  • Check out and discharge patients and collect necessary copayments.
  • Ensure all supplies are properly stocked and maintain an effective work area.
  • Schedule patient appointments and medical procedures (x-rays and diagnostic testing) using the EMR system.
  • Obtain surgical and diagnostic insurance authorizations.
  • Prepare examination rooms, ensure necessary supplies are readily available, and that rooms are cleaned and stocked.
  • Dispose of table paper and gowns, and clean contaminated surface areas such as door handles, blood pressure cuffs, chairs, and pull bars as time allows.
  • Greet patients in the waiting area promptly, courteously, and helpfully, and escort them to the lab or applicable examination room.
  • Prepare the patient for their appointment by assisting them in placing personal belongings in the appropriate place in the exam room.
  • Ensure any medications brought to the visit by the patient are placed into the patient’s chart.
  • Verify patient’s history prior to seeing the physician.
  • Obtain patient’s vital signs including weight, blood pressure, respiration, and pulse, and ensure they are recorded in the EMR.
  • Ensure the patient’s room number has been recorded on the encounter ticket and the ticket is placed in either the door or chart holder.
  • Assist the physician with office procedures as a second pair of hands (do not require administration of medications).
  • Collaborate with RN’s and LPN’s to provide high-quality patient care.
  • Clean and sterilize medical equipment and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of OSHA compliance standards and apply these policies and procedures to daily responsibilities.
  • Complete, in a timely manner, all training and in-services, including but not limited to annual OSHA training and PPD placements.
  • Maintain a high level of patient confidentiality.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Will also be cross-trained as PSR.
