About The Position

The Medical Assistant will obtain patient information and vital signs, assist the physician with patient follow-up calls, screen and follow-up with patient test results; maintain medical record information; coordinate patient care information with other health care providers; and obtain prior authorizations. Phone responsibilities may include answering the phone, creating telephone encounters, directing callers to the appropriate person/department, taking messages and scheduling appointments for the patients. The Medical Assistant may provide coverage for clerical positions as needed. This position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and service appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her area.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Current Medical Assistant Certification or Registration or LPN required
  • BLS for the Healthcare Provider 60 days after hire required

Responsibilities

  • Obtain patient information and vital signs.
  • Assist the physician with patient follow-up calls.
  • Screen and follow-up with patient test results.
  • Maintain medical record information.

  • Apply clinical screening tools and obtain/upgrade patient information and vital signs.
  • Order labs, refill prescriptions, and coordinate referrals/testing per protocol.
  • Review After Visit Summary (AVS) with patients and families to ensure understanding.
  • Provide patient education on care gaps, preventive health, and AVS instructions.
  • Support accessibility needs and room setup adjustments.
  • Manage referral communication and coordination with specialty offices.
  • Follow up on test results and ensure care team addresses abnormal or pending items.
  • Collaborate with providers to form a patient-centered care team.
  • Anticipate provider needs to enhance clinical productivity.
  • Facilitate communication between patients, providers, and care teams.
  • Screen calls, gather relevant information, and communicate professionally.
  • Ensure completion of confidential questionnaires and required forms.
  • Manage appointment scheduling, cancellations, and urgent visit protocols.
  • Coordinate with providers and pharmacy for medication management and adherence.
  • Prepare patients and exam rooms for procedures (e.g., minor surgeries, wound care, pap smears).
  • Assist providers during procedures by handing instruments, maintaining sterile fields, and supporting patient comfort.
  • Accurately document and update patient records and medication logs.
  • Maintain logs for clinical equipment, point-of-care testing, and sample medications.
  • Obtain prior authorizations (as needed) and manage recalls, overdues, and EMR actions.
  • Prepare charts for upcoming visits, ensuring all relevant records are available.
  • Initiate standing or routine pre-visit orders per protocol.
  • Coordinate with central services for proper categorization and routing of clinical documents.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement and respond effectively to changes in clinical workflows, policies, or priorities.
  • Engage in learning experiences and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Maintain ethical billing practices and patient confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively with referral sources.
  • Contribute to initiatives improving care coordination, reducing no-shows, and closing care gaps.
  • Provide workflow improvement feedback related to planning, huddles, and team collaboration.
