Medical Assistant, Ophthalmology
About The Position
An Ophthalmic Technician is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist as they assist in providing excellent patient care to the patients during their visit. This employee is able to handle a wide range of duties while using equipment to perform the initial testing needed to prepare a patient for an exam with an Ophthalmologist. The role involves facilitating patient flow, assisting the doctor in preliminary testing, verifying medical and vision insurances, and effectively communicating with patients, doctors, and managers. This position requires basic computer skills, strong customer service skills, and an excitement to learn and grow. The company is looking for a full-time, long-term employee and cannot accommodate students looking for only a summer job or part-time work during the school year.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Favorable result on Background Check
- Basic computer skills

- Minimum Required: One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
Nice To Haves
- Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred, but not required
- Desire to gain industry knowledge and training
- Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals

Responsibilities
- Facilitate patient flow
- Assist the doctor in preliminary testing
- Verify medical and vision insurances
- Effectively communicate with patients, doctors, and managers
- Answer inquiries through phone, email, and in-person requests
- Provide exceptional customer service during every patient encounter (in person or via phone)
- Display a professional attitude, greet patients promptly with a smile, and thank them when they leave
- Practice urgency at all times with patient’s time, as well as doctor’s time and schedule
- Comply with all company policies and procedures including HIPAA
- Verify patient information by interviewing patient
- Recording medical history, current medications and confirming purpose of visit
- Records all data in the patient's Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Checks condition of patient's eyes by observing pupils, muscles, visual acuity, and extraocular movements
- Perform a variety of diagnostic tests including visual fields, OCT, GDX, IOL master, auto refractor and topography
- General office duties and cleaning to be assigned by manager
