The Medical Assistant performs basic direct patient care activities, such as lab tests, treatments, and medication/immunization administration, under the direction of a Nurse and/or Physician. This role involves preparing patients for examinations, treatments, and procedures, and carrying out clerical duties to support the physician practice. The Medical Assistant also serves as a resource for clerical and clinical staff. Key functions include collecting patient healthcare data, completing patient care treatments and testing, ensuring documentation accuracy, preparing patients for procedures, communicating pertinent information, answering telephones, verifying patient demographic and insurance information, entering codes and charges into the billing system, completing patient care forms, ensuring patient safety, labeling specimens, adhering to infection control processes, assisting with survey readiness, performing quality control, and practicing National Patient Safety Goals. The role also involves scheduling surgeries, procedures, and testing, providing exit counseling, preparing charts, performing control studies, conducting phlebotomy, preparing exam rooms, and providing pre and post-examination education.
