Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED; successful completion of a medical assistant training program
  • 1–2 years as a medical assistant
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues pertaining to the profession.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and room clients for provider visits, including escorting clients to the clinical area, providing physical assistance when needed, documenting rooming time, obtaining vital signs, and recording the reason for the visit.
  • Maintain accurate and current client information in the electronic health record, including medications, allergies, relevant medical and family history, immunizations, medical supplies, and other non-provider entries.
  • Support providers during and following client visits by preparing examination areas, gathering required information, providing approved educational materials, and completing assigned clinical or administrative follow-up.
  • Coordinate prescription and pharmacy communications by receiving, documenting, and routing refill requests, pharmacy faxes, and medication-related messages to the appropriate provider in a timely manner.
  • Assist with care coordination, including scheduling initial and follow-up appointments, processing referrals, coordinating diagnostic testing, and supporting prior-authorization requests as directed.
  • Communicate professionally and promptly with clients, providers, pharmacies, laboratories, healthcare organizations, and other members of the care team through approved telephone, electronic, and written communication methods.
  • Maintain clinical rooms, equipment, and supplies in a clean, organized, safe, and ready-to-use condition, including monitoring inventory and reporting supply needs.
  • Follow all safety and infection-control requirements, including Standard Precautions, hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, sharps safety, and procedures related to exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
  • Protect client privacy and confidentiality and maintain all records and communications in accordance with RVCC policies and applicable privacy requirements.
  • Travel between RVCC client-care locations and provide occasional evening or weekend coverage when required by program needs.
  • Participate in required supervision, meetings, training, and competency reviews, and work cooperatively with clinical and administrative staff to support effective program operations.
