About The Position

SSM Health is offering a full time Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program in partnership with Madison College and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards. This is an 18-month commitment that includes 3 semesters of coursework and on-the-job training, equaling approximately 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Participants attend all in-person/virtual classroom & clinical sessions on paid work time and will be placed in a clinic that facilitates learning relevant to the program. Upon completion, apprentices are expected to register and pass the Certified Medical Assistant exam. Graduates will be invited to apply for a Medical Assistant role upon successful completion.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Reside in Wisconsin within a geographic area served by the Workforce Development Board of South-Central Wisconsin (Greater Madison area).
  • Reliable transportation to SSM Health clinic locations and Madison College campus
  • Applicants must be willing to sign and agree to the terms of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Apprenticeship Program
  • High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience
  • No experience required
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) required within 90 day of employment. Other resuscitation certifications may be required dependent on department.

Responsibilities

  • Routinely assists provider with patient exams, prepares exam rooms for specific procedures and assists with specific procedures.
  • Maintains patient medical record by verifying patient information upon each visit including: first/last name, date of birth, address, insurance information, and guarantor, filing/scanning all documents into the correct patient's medical record and in the proper location, and providing new patients with required registration forms for completion.
  • Aids in the care of the patient by notifying patients of normal test results, lab orders, returning patient phone calls, scheduling patients for testing, procedures, prescription refills, and referral appointments in a timely manner.
  • Collects clinical information correctly by interviewing patient at each visit and recording in medical record, preparing reports for provider to review, collecting clinical information from agencies, referring providers, hospital department, and properly documenting in medical record.
  • Routinely services patients by supplying correct information to insurance companies, maintaining confidentiality of patient information at all times, and releasing patient information only if appropriate consent is obtained.
  • Performs clinical duties by obtaining vital signs and accurately documenting in medical records, collecting and processing specimens, and depending on ministry, performing phlebotomy skills as indicated by completion of training and competency.
  • Maintains exam rooms by cleaning and stocking rooms as necessary, ordering supplies, preparing non-disposable instruments for sterilization.
  • Schedules patient appointments/rescheduling and cancelling appointments as necessary.
  • Processes incoming phone calls, by answering promptly and directing call to appropriate person.
  • Depending on ministry, may assist in the billing process by collecting and posting payments for services, balancing cash drawer by counting cash on a daily basis, preparing superbills with proper information prior to appointment, updating financial and personal information.
  • Files/scans all documents into the correct patient medical record and in the proper location within the medical record as required by office guidelines.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
