About The Position

The Medical Assistant Receptionist at the Pontiac Outpatient Clinic is responsible for registering patients, verifying insurance and general information, and making necessary changes. This role involves scheduling and managing patient appointments for providers, as well as assisting providers and administrative staff with basic office medical functions to ensure a coordinated approach to patient activities. The position requires a high school diploma, graduation from an approved Medical Assistant program or one year of equivalent experience, previous customer service experience, and previous medical office experience.

Responsibilities

  • Registers patients, verifies insurance and general information, and makes any necessary changes.
  • Schedules patient appointments for providers and performs canceling of appointments as needed.
  • Assists the provider and other ancillary administrative staff with basic office medical functions.
  • Performs clerical work including referrals, scheduling appointments, triaging phone calls, and filing.
  • Checks patients out after appointment and collects payment or bills insurance as needed.
  • Prints appointment memos off the system, per provider schedule.
  • Answers all calls in a prompt, courteous manner, addresses concerns, transfers calls, or takes messages.
  • Checks the system for patient’s account status.
  • Prints provider schedules for the next day and gives them to the nurses.
  • Provides information and answers questions for patients and providers.
  • Processes, sorts, and distributes mail.
  • Ensures and directly handles the timely mailing of patient recall notices and response billings.
  • Balances cash drawer and prepares deposit slip at the end of the day.
  • Performs filing of all reports, charts, and letters, and ensures forms are filled out completely and properly.
  • Works collaboratively with the provider in delivering patient care, obtains history of patient complaints, prepares patient for exam, and takes vital signs.
  • Functions collaboratively with all staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Assists provider with exam paperwork and procedures as needed.
  • Gives injections, draws blood, and performs various diagnostic testing (EKG, PFT, etc.).
  • Stocks rooms, takes care of instruments and autoclaves.
  • Calls patients or pharmacies as instructed by the physician for prescription renewal.
  • Relays laboratory or radiology orders from the provider or nurses to the patient when he or she comes in for tests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/directed.
