About The Position

At UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, our Medical Assistants & Patient Service Coordinators play a vital role in supporting patients with compassion, professionalism, and care—creating a welcoming, supportive environment every step of the way. The Medical Assistant / Patient Service Coordinator supports physicians by assisting with patient care and completing clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks to ensure a positive patient experience. Daily responsibilities include taking vital signs, triaging patients, stocking supplies, and cleaning exam rooms. The ideal candidate also brings front‑office experience, such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and helping manage patient flow. We’re seeking someone who communicates compassionately with patients and families, can multitask in a fast‑paced setting, works well both independently and as part of a team, and brings empathy, professionalism, and a strong commitment to exceptional patient care.

Requirements

Medical Assistant: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Patient care experience preferred.
Medical Assistant, Senior: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Medical Assistant, Senior: Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) OR at least 1 year of patient care experience.
Medical Assistant, Senior: Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in three practice category-specific tasks as determined by the manager.
Medical Assistant, Senior: Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
Medical Assistant, Expert: Successful completion of Medical Assistant Program or equivalent hospital program (LPN/RN/EMT) OR successful completion of certification examination (AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, or NHA) and 1 year of patient care experience OR at least 2 years of patient care experience.
Medical Assistant, Expert: Must successfully complete the UPMC Preceptor training and serve as a preceptor and mentor to newly hired team members.
Medical Assistant, Expert: Must be responsible and demonstrate proficiency in all practice category-specific tasks as determined by the manager.
Patient Service Coordinator: High School graduate or equivalent required.
Patient Service Coordinator: Minimum of three years of direct patient care and or phlebotomy experience.
Patient Service Coordinator: Must have basic computer skills and knowledge of medical terminology, examination, diagnostic and treatment room responsibilities.
Patient Service Coordinator: Possesses strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with individuals from multi-disciplinary groups.
Patient Service Coordinator: Possesses excellent organizational skills.
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Responsibilities

Completes vital signs, specimen testing and EKGs as needed.
Organizes daily schedule of patients, greet patients and assigns rooms.
Orders supplies for unit as necessary.
Maintains competency requirements.
Coordinates the ordering of blood products in collaboration with RNs, Blood Bank and Laboratory.
Greets each person entering the clinic, identifies self and role. Explains processes and procedures to new patients and assists with paperwork.
Participate in interdisciplinary activities such as staff meetings and other committees as assigned.
Other Duties as Assigned.
Maintain high visibility. Stationed in a prominent area in the clinic that is readily identifiable and accessible to customer.
Anticipates and responds to meet customer needs.
Respond appropriately to crisis situation as a team member.
Assists in the registration of patients to include verification and confirmation of health insurance coverage.
Immediately report any situation that may impact safety of patients, visitors and staff.
Provides front desk coverage as assigned.
Continuously monitors environment and facilitates correction of any detraction from the appearance, comfort and safety of the clinic.
Account for all customers in the clinic.
Provides lobby/waiting room coordination and supervision.
Serve as liaison between customer and clinic staff.
Collects 100%25 of copays daily and correctly balances at the end of each day.
Coordinates scheduling to include testing.
Coordinates and manages the bone marrow biopsy schedule for multiple practitioners and bone marrow technician.
