About The Position

The Medical Assistant provides basic clinical, clerical, and technical support to assist providers in planning for patients’ care, comfort, and safety. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the direction of a primary care provider, as part of the healthcare team, and is responsible for providing general clinical nursing support. The individual is accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care required for the patient and will assist in the development and revision of patient’s care plan.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program.
  • Experience as a licensed practical nurse within an area relative to the hiring department.
  • Licensed Practical Nurse license awarded by the State of Michigan.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire.
  • For LPNs who may be requested to float to a Wisconsin clinic, a WI LPN license must be obtained within the first 3 months.
  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Program or applicable on the job clinical experience.
  • If Medical Assistant Program has not been completed, must have applicable on the job clinical experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days of hire.
  • If travel to offsite locations is required, must possess a valid driver’s license and have a driving record without a significant history of accidents and/or convictions of moving violations.

Nice To Haves

  • For Wound Clinic, must complete a UHMS certified introductory course in wound care and hyperbaric medicine within first 3 months.
  • For Wound Clinic, a Certified Wound Care Associate (CWCA) certification is required within 3 ½ years.
  • Experience working as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares instruments, equipment and materials needed for patient care; keeps exam room aseptic, neat and supplied.
  • Obtains and documents complete patient data in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Prepares patients for exams and assists provider with exams/tests/procedures as needed.
  • Instructs patients in preparation for specific procedures and tests when appropriate.
  • Performs basic procedures as ordered by provider and within scope of practice.
  • Processes provider's orders, prepares appropriate forms, and schedules appointments and services.
  • Arranges for hospital admission when indicated.
  • Ensures that charges are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Assists the provider with obtaining test results.
  • Proficiently uses computer applications as required for patient care.
  • Processes prescriptions as directed.
  • Communicates with patients regarding their concerns, collects information, and relays this information professionally and efficiently to the provider.
  • Completes clerical or insurance processes to ensure the proper documentation and submission of charges is completed in a timely manner.
  • Regular attendance is required in order to carry out the essential functions of the position.
  • Reviews and meets ongoing competency requirements of the role to maintain the skills, knowledge and abilities to perform, within scope, role specific functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Prepares instruments, equipment, materials and exam rooms to ensure the appropriate items are available for patient care.
  • Assists the provider with exams, tests and procedures and provides patient instructions to provide appropriate patient care and ensures the patient is knowledgeable on self-care procedures.
  • Completes clerical or insurance processes to ensure the proper documentation and submission of charges is completed in a timely manner.
  • Assists the provider with obtaining, processing or explaining test results or prescriptions to the patient to ensure the information is accurate and understood by the patient.
  • Communicates with patients regarding their concerns and collects information to resolve the matter, if within their scope, or relays the information to the provider for further follow-up.
  • Participates in the development of the care plan with other team members to safely and accurately implement the plan.
  • Provides instruction to the patient and/or family members to ensure an understanding of the information pertaining to the patient.
  • Completes steps to fill prescriptions per protocol and completes prior authorization forms to ensure proper billing and fill of the prescription for the patient.
