About The Position

An Ophthalmic Technician/Medical Assistant is a valuable asset to an Ophthalmologist as they assist in providing excellent patient care to the patients during their visit. This part-time position requires working at least 3 days per week, around 24 hours a week, within the center's operating hours of Monday-Friday 6 am-4 pm. Availability on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays is mandatory.

Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
One year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook.
Desire to gain industry knowledge and training.
Demonstrates initiative in accomplishing practice goals.
Ability to grow, adapt, and accept change.
Consistently creates a positive work environment by being team-oriented and patient-focused.
Ability to interact with all levels of employees in a courteous, professional manner at all times.
Ability to work weekends when applicable.
Reliable transportation that would allow employee to go to multiple work locations with minimal notice.
Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%).
Regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%).
Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential.
Constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology.
Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus—is required 100% of the time.
Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.

Nice To Haves

Current Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) certification is preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

Assists in monitoring vital signs and transporting patients.
Maintains aseptic technique at all times and observes for any break in technique.
Cares properly for contaminated items.
Assists in stocking OR supplies and maintains adequate inventory of surgical supplies.
Checks equipment, such as sterilizer and refrigerator temperature, each surgical day and documents on monthly log sheet.
Assists in pre-op assessment.
Discontinues Hep-Locks.
Assists in post-op instruction review with patient.
Acts under the direct supervision of the nurse.
Performs fingerstick blood sugar and documents results in the medical record.
Assists physician during laser procedures.
Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the nurses and/or physician.
Identifies patient and family teaching needs and initiates intervention to meet needs.
Maintains and promotes a positive, safe environment for patients and co-workers.
Assists with or initiates emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patient’s condition.
Monitors levels of inventory in accordance with desired quantities.
Attends departmental meetings and in-service education and shows responsibility for own professional practice and on-going education.
Participates in economical utilization of supplies and medication, and ensures that equipment is maintained in a clean and safe manner.
