About The Position

The Toledo Clinic's Oncology Department is seeking a full-time Medical Assistant. This clinical position is responsible for controlling patient flow for physician/NP/Chemotherapy appointments. The Medical Assistant will assist physicians and NPs with patient care, clerical, clinical, environmental, and organizational tasks. This role involves recording necessary provider information during appointments, preparing patients for visits by collecting vital signs and other clinical data, and operating assigned office lab functions including venipuncture. The Medical Assistant will support the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by promoting timely access to care, providing continuity of care coordination, and coaching patients and families on self-care management. The hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Requirements

  • Consistently arrives at work in appropriate/professional attire.

  • BLS or CPR certification.
  • Credentialed as a Medical Assistant (i.e.: CMA or RMA) or ability to obtain such credential within 60 days of hire.

  • Skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with physicians and non-physician support staff.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and applications.
  • Working knowledge of Clinical IT applications.

  • Seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed and assists co-workers as needed.
  • Demonstrates adaptability to expanded roles.
  • Medical assisting degree or diploma from an accredited school.

Responsibilities

  • Control patient flow in assigned clinic to minimize patient wait time.
  • Check schedules and organize patient flow.
  • Accompany patients to exam/procedure room.
  • Assist patient as needed (walking, transfers, specimen collection).
  • Collect patient information: Height, weight, allergies, medication reconciliation, health maintenance, social, medical, surgical history, and review of systems.
  • Utilize EMR to record patient-specific data.
  • Identify trigger questions for Social Determinants of Health and notify providers of needs.
  • Perform venipuncture on patients as needed and send timely, including collection of kit lab draws.
  • Set up and assist with bone marrow procedures.
  • Clean exam rooms between patient visits.
  • Clean equipment.
  • Verify equipment is in working order and take appropriate action if it is not.
  • Follow maintenance schedule for all biomedical equipment.
  • Order, sort, and store supplies.
  • Restock exam rooms.
  • Send and receive patient medical records.
  • Access all health system portals to obtain information needed during the visit that was not obtained during the chart prep process.
  • Administer subcutaneous/intramuscular injections as directed by a provider/APP.
  • Document injections correctly in the chart.
  • Pull medication from Nucleus on the same day as the injection is given.
  • Coordinate with physicians regarding missing test results to determine if an appointment should occur.
  • Complete forms and requisitions as needed.
  • Participate as a member of organization/institutional committees as requested.
  • Conceive innovative strategies and ideas for the center, exhibiting “out of the box” thinking.
  • Perform job duties effectively with minimal direction.
  • Initiate new ideas and projects that enhance patient care or other aspects of services and care.
  • Serve as a team member among co-workers and peers.
  • Participate in TCCC activities that enhance patient care and work surroundings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all personally identifiable healthcare information of the patient.
  • Ensure that any oral or written disclosure of personally identifiable healthcare information is the minimum necessary to serve the purpose of performing quality care to the patient.
  • Understand that any disclosure outside payment, treatment, or healthcare operations requires written patient authorization in each instance.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the cultural diversity of patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
