The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for assisting physician, PA or NP with clerical duties, patient flow, patient care and procedures. The MA prepares the examination room, escorts patients into the room, and cleans the examination room when the exam is complete. They maintain efficient patient flow, ensure proper preparation for patient visits, and prepare pertinent information needed for patient visits. The role involves communicating and providing care consistent with the age, cultural, spiritual, and developmental needs of the patient. The MA will answer the telephone appropriately, direct calls, and/or take accurate messages. They will also schedule appointments accurately and appropriately according to departmental guidelines. The position requires consistently and accurately stocking examination rooms with all necessary supplies and assisting in ordering and maintaining supplies as assigned. Reconciling encounters daily and accurately, according to policy guidelines, is also a key responsibility. The MA must effectively communicate problems, concerns, or issues to the Supervisor and/or Manager appropriately and promptly, and understand and perform within their scope of practice. Obtaining vital signs (BP, temp, pulse, height & weight) accurately and completely as required, and documenting appropriately in the EHR are essential. The role includes reviewing and updating medication lists and accurately documenting known allergies in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Demonstrating an understanding of prescription control and prescription refill procedures is necessary. The MA will appropriately enter orders and schedule appointments in the Practice Management System (PMS) and EHR, and provide referrals and/or consult orders appropriately and in a timely manner in the PMS and EHR. Adhering to universal safety precautions when administering medications and disposing of medical waste is required. Maintaining proficiency with department-specific equipment, troubleshooting, and reporting malfunctions promptly are also part of the duties. Facilitating transition of care to UCC/Hospital and demonstrating flexibility with various work schedules are expected. All other duties as assigned, including recognizing and performing duties that need to be performed although not directly assigned, and providing scribing services.
