About The Position

This position is responsible for scheduling patient appointments, ensuring medical necessity compliance, verifying eligibility, and posting payments. The role also involves performing direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Physician. The Medical Assistant/Office Assistant will also function as a team leader, ensuring daily processes are complete, scheduling employees, answering questions, and assisting with orientation and training. Effective and professional communication with various stakeholders, including physicians, care management, ancillary departments, nursing units, physician office staff, insurance companies, patients, and their families is crucial. The position requires thorough and accurate documentation and adherence to all Memorial Hermann policies and procedures. The role involves delivering appropriate patient care, including specialized skills, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team. It also includes mentoring and serving as a team lead to less experienced staff, ensuring safe care, and promoting professional growth and development. Requirements

  • Graduation and certification from an accredited school of Medical Assisting in lieu of education, Clinical education and/or experience may be substituted for MA certificate
  • Three (3) years of experience in a hospital or medical business office setting
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Proficient typing/keyboarding skills

Responsibilities

  • Schedules patient appointments and enters required information in the computer system accurately and timely.
  • Obtains demographic, insurance, and financial information from the patient or guarantor and enters it into the computer system with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Explains all required forms to the patient or guarantor and obtains necessary signatures.
  • Ensures medical necessity compliance by obtaining necessary data, reviewing the Compliance System, communicating information to the patient or guarantor, and obtaining necessary signatures.
  • Protects the financial integrity of the facility by collecting patient liability, establishing payment arrangements, discussing payment options, and screening for eligibility.
  • Completes complex financial counseling, including the review and submission of charity applications.
  • Identifies alternative resources for financial reimbursement.
  • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits, ensuring all notifications and authorizations are completed within the required timeframes.
  • Posts payments in the computer system and generates appropriate patient receipts.
  • Monitors, reviews, and resolves patient account issues on assigned reports.
  • Performs account analysis and trending.
  • Completes quality review and monitors for process improvement opportunities.
  • Functions as a team leader in the department by ensuring daily processes are complete, scheduling employees, providing answers to employee questions, and assisting in employee orientation and training.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with Physicians, Care Management, ancillary departments, nursing units, physicians’ office staff, insurance companies, as well as patients and their families.
  • Completes thorough and accurate documentation.
  • Adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards, within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice.
  • Delivers appropriate care to patients, at a competent level, including specialized skills (i.e. EKG, IV Therapy initiation, blood administration, and/or unit-defined specialized skills), and the age and needs of the patient/population served.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team while making clinical decisions in the delivery of patient care; supports and collaborates with the Registered Nurse or Physician in providing direction to the healthcare team.
  • Serves as mentor and team lead to less experienced staff.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff, and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity, and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
