About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of medical assisting duties such as; preparing patients for examinations; obtaining medical histories and vital signs, maintaining and organizing exam rooms including stocking of supplies; assisting physician or provider with examinations or surgeries; performing diagnostic tests and studies. Acts as an assistant to the physician or provider in patient care management. Responsible for maintaining confidentiality of patient information. Assignments involve judgment based on knowledge gained through a medical assistant training program or LPN program, and experience.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant educational program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain within 2 months of employment and maintain throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of medical practice patient care.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with patients, physicians, stag manager and contacts external to the practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of experience as a medical assistant may replace educational requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Follows directions and instructions of physician or provider as it relates to patient care management.
  • Responsible for the management of patient flow; escorts patients to exam rooms, ensures patients are prepared for exams.
  • Responsible for cleanliness and orderliness of exam and procedure rooms according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Ensures necessary supplies and instruments are appropriately stocked in exam rooms.
  • Ensures patient’s medical record is complete prior to appointment time by reviewing the record to confirm tests, studies and consult reports were obtained.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and surgeries by taking vital signs, according to office protocol and documents findings in the medical record.
  • Documents other patient medical information as directed by physician.
  • Requests patient drape for exams according to protocol outlined by provider.
  • Assists with diagnostic procedures, treatments, examinations.
  • Performs diagnostic procedures, treatments, injections and immunizations, and venipuncture according to protocol outlined by the physician or provider.
  • Handles and/or refers patient inquiries to physician or provider according to instructions, verbal or written.
  • Obtains pharmacy information and upon physician/provider approval, contacts pharmacy to place orders for prescriptions.
  • Responsible for making appointments for diagnostic tests, studies, consults, surgical boarding and scheduling of pre admission testing per the direction of physician or provider.
  • Obtains and completes referral forms as indicated.
  • Assists in scheduling patients and answering telephone.
  • Acts as a liaison with outside ancillary services for issues regarding reports and laboratory equipment.
  • Routinely provides physician/provider with incoming diagnostic test results for review and signature.
  • Through direction of physician/provider contacts patient to provide test results, instructions or schedule follow-up visits.
  • Maintains patient follow-up system.
  • Responsible for ensuring medical supplies and equipment for procedures are ordered and available, in advance of need, including sterilization.
  • Maintains drug sample inventory system and health department immunization log.
  • Assists with timely retrieving and filing of medical records and medical record documents including dictation.
  • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested including annual OSHA training.
  • Maintains work area according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Assists in CQI by recommending specific ideas for improvement and working on CQI projects as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
