Requirements

  • At least 1 year of recent experience as a Surgical Assistant, Medical Assistant, LPN or other clinically based patient care experience (highly preferred)
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, Surgical Tech, LPN or Bachelor’s degree program in a pre-med or pre-physician’s assistant track (required)
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and able to work well within a team
  • Professionalism and strong customer service skills is a must
  • Able to communicate with doctor clearly and concisely
  • Able to communicate with patients and co-workers in a professional and friendly manner
  • Knowledge of and compliance with HIPAA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to the exam/procedure room and assist as needed with walking.
  • Collect patient information/history, take vitals, and perform screenings per provider guidelines.
  • Prepare paperwork for the patient’s current visit and ensure complete and accurate documentation within the patient’s electronic medical record.
  • Complete pre-operative intake via a one-on-one interview with the patient, explain surgical procedures, and answer any questions within your scope.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all supplies needed for procedures.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures in adherence to HIPAA regulations.
  • Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer an injection of local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis.
  • Assist the physician during all procedures (passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, etc).
  • Bandage surgical sites, prepare proper discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients, and answer any questions or concerns they may have.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization in an autoclave.
  • Collect and accurately process specimens.
  • Prepare pathology and lab specimens, routing them to the correct lab as required by the patient’s insurance, and maintain an accurate pathology log.
  • Remove sutures.
  • Notify patients of pathology and lab results.
  • Respond to patient questions in the office and on the phone as instructed.
  • Schedule or re-schedule appointments with providers and specialists as necessary, sending appropriate records.
  • Maintain medication samples, discard out-of-date supplies, and keep appropriate records.
  • Maintain infection control, cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets well stocked.
  • Document all medical instructions given to patients.
  • Perform other duties assigned as deemed necessary by management.
