The Medical Assistant (MA) Float for Orthopedic Surgery will adhere to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, follow all policies and procedures, and maintain training and competency based on the area of specialty when providing patient care. This role involves performing rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings. The MA will assist providers with or perform procedures as ordered, and handle lab-related duties including venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking. The position also includes performing Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order and completing Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing. Administering medications and vaccines safely is a key responsibility, as are other duties such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals. The MA will be cross-trained to perform duties relevant to specialty or clinic practice within the scope of the Medical Assistant, demonstrating effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation. Maintaining a clean work environment, ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately, and ensuring equipment and supplies are in working order and areas are appropriately stocked are also essential. The role requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, understanding the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and assessing data reflective of the patient's status to identify age-specific needs.
