Medical Assistant/ LPN: Heart Failure Iowa Heart
About The Position
This role is for a Medical Assistant or LPN within the Heart Failure department at Iowa Heart. The position is full-time, day shift. The Medical Assistant will perform essential functions including recognizing urgent/emergent patient needs, adhering to payor regulations, managing the electronic medical record, facilitating interdisciplinary communication, assessing patient learning needs, assisting with procedures and diagnostic equipment, maintaining aseptic technique, documenting patient interactions, reporting results, performing basic medical assistant functions under supervision, and maintaining exam room supplies. Marginal functions include cross-coverage in other clinic areas, equipment maintenance, and participation in Performance Improvement projects.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification must be obtained within the first year of employment and maintained thereafter.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.

Responsibilities
- Recognize urgent/emergent needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures.
- Function within the guidelines of various payor regulations.
- Organize and manage the electronic medical record, including test results, filing, creation, and charging.
- Facilitate interdisciplinary communication and utilize healthcare team members for patient assessment.
- Assess learning needs of the patient and family, and provide accurate information.
- Evaluate patient and family understanding of treatment plans and instructions.
- Assist with a variety of procedures, exams, and operation of diagnostic equipment (e.g., EKG, spirometry, tympanometry).
- Maintain appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures, and medication administration.
- Accurately document all patient interactions in the electronic medical record.
- Report results and pertinent information to patients and healthcare team members.
- Function according to the limitations of scope of license or certification.
- Perform basic medical assistant functions (vitals, rooming, assist with procedures, immunizations, medication injections) under direction and supervision.
- Maintain professional appearance of patient exam and procedure rooms.
- Maintain supplies in assigned area.
- Provide cross coverage in other clinic areas as team needs.
- Follow equipment maintenance protocol, identify problems, and coordinate repairs.
- Participate in Performance Improvement projects.
