About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) will assist healthcare providers with patient examinations and treatments. Obtain and document patient vital signs, medical histories, and other clinical information. Prepare patients for examinations and procedures. Draw blood and administer medications as directed by authorized healthcare providers.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Graduate of an Accredited Medical Assistant school or program.
  • Current licensure as a Medical Assistant in the State of West Virginia.
  • Certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Nice To Haves

  • Certification is recommended as a Medical Assistant from a National Organization such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

Responsibilities

  • Assist healthcare providers with patient examinations and treatments.
  • Obtain and document patient vital signs, medical histories, and other clinical information.
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures.
  • Draw blood and administer medications as directed by authorized healthcare providers.
  • Provide interpretation of technical and clinical information as needed.
  • Perform procedures within scope of practice, including sterile dressing application and packing, enemas, suture and staple application/removal, and application of orthopedic splints as prescribed.
  • Assist providers during minor surgical procedures, including biopsies, laceration repairs, and excision of small masses.
  • Perform routine treatments and diagnostic procedures, including electrocardiograms (EKGs), peak flow measurements, point-of-care blood glucose testing, point-of-care urinalysis testing, laboratory specimen collection, and venipuncture.
  • Administer directly observed therapy (DOT/pill line) medications.
  • Support clinic patient flow by obtaining vital signs and weight and uploading laboratory results into the Bureau Electronic Medical Record (BEMR) system.
  • Follow all standard infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Assist with patient discharge and ensure patients understand follow-up care instructions.
  • Clean, sterilize, maintain, and perform minor troubleshooting of clinical equipment; report defective equipment for corrective action.
  • Maintain adequate clinical supply inventories and notify appropriate personnel when supplies require replenishment.
  • Ensure instruments and unauthorized items are properly secured and not left in patient care areas during non-patient care hours.
  • Assist with medical record audits and quality reviews.
  • Perform clerical and administrative support duties, including use of institution-specific computer systems such as SENTRY.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the Health Services Manual and institutional policies and procedures necessary to perform assigned duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
