About The Position

This is a full-time Medical Assistant Lead position at Atrium Health Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine - Kenilworth. The role involves supporting daily workflow and operations, assisting with training, and performing direct patient care tasks. The position requires adherence to the Medical Assistant scope of practice, following all policies and procedures, and maintaining competency. The Medical Assistant Lead will also assist the department leader with tasks such as developing staffing schedules, ordering supplies, and conducting audits. They will serve as a role model and resource for the team, and participate in initiatives supporting quality, safety, engagement, and patient experience. Key patient care duties include rooming patients, performing vital signs, medication reconciliation, health history, administering medications and vaccines, performing lab tests, and assisting providers with procedures. Effective communication, teamwork, and maintaining a clean and stocked work environment are essential. The role requires the ability to provide age-appropriate care and demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or may have completed structured military training which is clinical in nature per DD214 in lieu of a formal medical assistant program or EMT.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Recognized or certified as a CMA or RMA by one of the following National Organizations: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), National Health Career Association (NHA), National Healthcare Worker's Association (NHCWA), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA) American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP), National Registry of Medical Assistants (NRMA).
  • Successful completion of system approved program to become a primary trainer for new teammates.
  • Four years of experience in a clinical practice setting as a Medical Assistant, with a minimum of two years as a certified or registered Medical Assistant.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex technical skills, within the Medical Assistant scope of practice after demonstrated competency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with a variety of patients, team members and physicians.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Demonstrates customer service skills that support a positive patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice, follows all policies and procedures, and maintains training and competency based on area of specialty when providing patient care.
  • Assists the department leader to support daily workflow and operations for maximum efficiency and productivity (i.e. developing and modifying staffing schedules, medication/supply ordering, audits, etc.).
  • Assists with training and onboarding and acts as a resource for the team.
  • Serves as a role champion or on a committee to support quality, safety, teammate engagement, patient experience, and general process improvement initiatives.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings (depression, suicide, falls, social drivers of health, etc.).
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Point of Care testing (POCT) per standing order/provider order.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests and practice-specific diagnostic testing in adherence to CLIA standards.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order, and areas are appropriately stocked.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
