Supports the practitioner and clinical team in proactive patient management under indirect supervision. Performs a variety of technical, clerical, receptionist, and patient care duties to assist healthcare providers in delivering high-quality patient care. Prepares sterile and unsterile fields and assists practitioners with minor and occasional office-based surgical procedures. The role requires interaction with patients, families, and the healthcare team in a courteous and professional manner, recognizing patient needs and concerns while maintaining positive working relationships. The Medical Assistant will obtain and record vital signs, patient history, and other pertinent information, demonstrating critical thinking and observing, recording, and reporting patient symptoms and condition changes. Immediate reporting of adverse observations or emergency situations to the practitioner is crucial. The position involves using data systems to identify and manage orders for preventive and screening services, ensuring patient comfort, safety, and well-being. The Medical Assistant accepts orders for treatments and procedures within their scope of practice and competencies, transcribes patient data into electronic systems using ICD-9 and CPT codes for billing and reporting, and anticipates provider needs during procedures. Flexibility in adjusting to changes in procedures, assignments, or workload is expected. The role requires efficient performance, calmness in emergencies, adherence to established procedures, and prioritization of care based on patient acuity. Preparation of rooms and instruments, collection and processing of specimens, and patient/family education regarding preparation and follow-up for tests, procedures, and treatments are key responsibilities. Coordination with nursing supervisors and other departments to maintain patient care standards, application and removal of dressings, and instruction on the use of orthotic devices are also part of the role. Assisting practitioners with sterile and unsterile fields and routine minor surgical procedures, respecting patient privacy, dignity, and safety, and providing emotional support are essential. Documentation of patient care interactions, understanding of insurance requirements for authorizations, and coordination with clerical teams for authorizations and scheduling are necessary. Ensuring equipment is available, clean, safe, and operable, and reporting malfunctions are required. Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-equipped environment, following procedures for contaminated instruments, and cleaning rooms and equipment are also part of the duties. Reviewing, compiling, and preparing clinical records, retrieving documentation, and informing practitioners of diagnostic results for timely follow-up are important. Notifying practitioners of patient cancellations or no-shows, encouraging open communication, and relaying accurate information are expected. Assisting patients with non-clinical complaints and referring clinical issues to supervisors are also part of the role. Receiving and transferring calls, providing service-related information, arranging appointments, answering calls regarding prescription refills, and relaying messages between callers and the healthcare team are required. Processing referrals and coordinating with other hospital departments to manage practitioners' schedules are also key functions. Maintaining familiarity with various schedules, procedures, coding techniques, and practitioner preferences, gathering documents for notes and orders, and alerting about problems are necessary. Directing patients to the business office for financial concerns, ensuring adequate supply stocking, and using supplies conservatively for inventory control are also responsibilities. Participation in staff meetings and departmental committees, prioritizing workflow, and adhering to organizational and departmental standards, policies, and procedures are expected. The Medical Assistant must demonstrate knowledge, skills, and competency in clinical skills, use of clinical equipment, and providing age-appropriate care.
