About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 90%-100% Medical Assistant II to work in the Medicine Specialty Clinic. Under direct supervision of a licensed independent practitioner, RN, nurse manager/assistant nurse manager, or other licensed designee, this role functions as a member of the patient care team. The Medical Assistant II performs technical, patient care, and related clerical functions in an urgent care setting by coordinating all elements of the patient visit. Staff will support organ Medicine Specialty patients, facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff. Requirements

  • Certification OR registration as a Medical Assistant OR completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, OR Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology.
  • Upload a resume that clearly addresses how they meet the listed required and desired qualifications.
  • Upload a copy of educational transcripts if not certified/registered as a Medical Assistant or if a Medical Assistant Program was not completed.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the smooth flow of patients through the clinic.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments.
  • Take patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manage internal and external medical records to ensure accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administer routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment (only by certified medical assistants or those who have completed formal accredited training).
  • Perform routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work.
  • Perform electrocardiograms and x-ray work as needed.
  • Identify vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Perform related clerical tasks including answering phones, scheduling appointments, and providing information to other departments.
  • Assist in obtaining insurance prior authorizations.
