This position functions as a Medical Assistant in the department, preparing and maintaining exam rooms, preparing charts, obtaining reports and records; assisting with patient flow and ensuring the overall smooth running of the clinical office. The Medical Assistant II will interact directly with patients in a clinic setting and complete clinical tasks, which may include obtaining vital signs, conducting EKGs, completing phlebotomy, and verifying medications. They will prepare for office hours by obtaining charts, scheduling tests, and preparing exam rooms. This role assists with examinations, procedures, and lab tests, and may assist with the renewal and authorization of non-narcotic medications per standing orders and department guidelines. Additionally, they may administer medications under the order of physicians or nurse practitioners, including vaccines and injections. The role involves directing patient flow, assisting with special procedures/treatments, and completing requisitions. Communication includes routing phone messages, patient questions, and telephone communications to appropriate personnel. Care coordination tasks include calling patients with test results, scheduling appointments, assisting with return calls, scheduling surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and admissions, and monitoring new and return patient contacts. The Medical Assistant II will complete necessary paperwork and documentation in a timely manner and answer basic questions from patients/families regarding treatments, diagnosis, and procedures. They will also monitor supply inventory, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available and compliant with regulations, and will clean and stock exam rooms and sterilize instruments. Maintaining HIPAA compliance, skills/competencies, and participating in in-services, staff programs, continuing education, and cross-training programs are essential. Compliance with OSHA, state, and federal regulatory sources/standards, and participation in quality improvement activities are also required. This role is located in a normal office environment with exposure to blood-borne pathogens requiring protective devices, and involves direct patient care in a patient care setting.
