About The Position

IU Health’s Neuroscience Center is seeking a highly motivated Medical Assistant II to support an innovative brain health program focused on patients with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners. This is a net new role on a small, dedicated team where patient safety, coordination, and proactive communication are essential. This position is ideal for an MA who thrives in an administrative, heavy, coordination-focused role, works well independently, and is motivated by meaningful patient impact. Under the supervision of the designated supervisor and assigned physician, performs duties associated with direct patient care and clinical direction to provide patient care given in accordance with the organization standards. Assures completeness of ordered procedures and treatments, assures smooth patient flow, performs general lab work, instructs patients concerning procedures, treatments and needs, and ensures medical orders and referrals are carried out accurately and in a timely manner. Performs registration and scheduling activities per organizational and departmental procedures. Maintains EMR files and performs general front office functions as needed. May perform computerized physician order entry, only if directed by assigned physician. Expected to precept current MA team members or MA Externs as requested by leadership.

Requirements

  • Medical Assistant II-certification preferred
  • Non‑certified MA I candidates will be considered with strong initiative and relevant experience as well as certified candidates with limited previous experience
  • Prior experience in a clinic setting preferred
  • Experience working closely with nurses or nurse navigators highly valued
  • Experience with aging populations and/or Alzheimer’s disease or caregiver support is a plus
  • AHA Basic Life Support for healthcare workers certification required
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program required
  • Current certification in medical assisting required from America Association of Medical Assistants (CMA), American Medical Technologists (RMA), National Health Career Association (CCMA), National Center for competency Testing (NCMA), and/or American Medical Certification Association (CMAC)
  • Knowledge of OSHA, CLIA, and ADA required
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding required
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory and medical procedures
  • Knowledge of insurance plans and third-party payers
  • Ability to master standard clinical competencies per current Clinical policy, Point of Care and Skills Competency checklists
  • Requires basic math and accurate data collection and entry skills

Nice To Haves

  • TB validated (to administer or read) or validation obtained within 6 months of hire preferred
  • Knowledge of Business Unit Quality Programs, Meaningful Use and Standard Work Programs and concepts within 6 months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive chart review for new referrals and return visits
  • Support MRI scheduling and ensure required screening information is complete
  • Coordinate with nurses, nurse navigators, scheduling, and financial resource coordinators
  • Track and communicate patient treatment progress via Cerner and phone
  • Assemble patient education materials and ensure timely documentation
  • Maintain accurate patient records (cognitive testing, infusion records, appointment results)
  • Support nurse-led patient education visits on designated clinic days
  • Provide limited patient rooming support (approximately 1 day per week)
  • This role is primarily administrative, with ongoing interaction across multiple care teams and frequent patient touchpoints.
